The term you're looking for is 'anti-aliasing'. Regular multisample anti-aliasing as offered by your ATi card
should work, provided you've enabled it.
Ah! Now I see what's wrong. No matter what I set on the ati control panel, it can't be done since my resolution is too big (1680x1050) for that. Ati control panel says that 1280x1024 is the maximum resolution if you want to set antialias. So I set it to "let the application decide", but Thief shows those non-straight lines.

I am just one more desperate unsuccessfull thief dark project player and i need help to someone point me on some good answer because i am a little tired of searching. i think i have spent about 12 hours today to find solution for a famous black screen. Yap, one more looser with stupid black screen.
Just want to say that i have played that game more then a decade ago, and it was great. Now i want to refresh memories... :)
Ok to stop with the crap, and to give some info.
I have downloaded game from net, and as much as i know about pc's and protected games, this game is full cd copy of Thief Gold, and i did this:
I have installed game easily on XP, and like others i passed main menu and intros and when the level should start, black screen appear. I tried various compatibility modes and nothing. I forgot to tell that i did set processor affinity before. then i tried various nvidia drivers (from 93.81 to the latest) and need to say that the same effect is getting on all versions of drivers and even when i didn't had nvidia drivers installed (when i used just microsofts drivers that came with win Xp). I have the latest directX 9 (7300 gt is my graphic card - old but still do the job). I tried the patched exe for the 3d support. i tried to set 0 to hardware, copy ddfix files, and even indeo codec, reinstalling, and who knows what more... And still nothing, and that is pissing me off. Just cant believe that this is happening...
My conclusion is that problem is not in graphic card and driver, because always is the same, no matter what the drivers are. But maybe i am wrong. i do believe that some settings mast cause this. I found some threads, but i didnt understood a thing. and i am out of energy at the moment and need to get rest :(. So i beg you if someone know something or can point me on some page to do so. I will appreciate that very much.
Thanks, Milos

I want to thank you first. And to appoligie because i didnt respond earlier.
In the meantime i found the solution. I downloaded some installed version and the game was working perfectly on my pc. So i started to investigate and compare all files in hope that i will find the diference, and i found it. It was the cam.cfg only. I copied lines from the downloaded game to my game file and the game started for the very first time. Also wanted to add the the nvidia drivers that i have used are the LATEST (285.xx dont know the exact version, but who care. I didnt used the ddfix, or the fixed .exe file for nvidia drivers 5x.xx or anything that could be found on the internet. Now i have just a problem with esc and map screen in game, but i found the thread on this site that is talking about that problem and i am solving it slowly. Once again thank you on reply and i hope that someone will find this as usefull.
Very best regards, Milos

I can't get the bloom effect to work at all, no matter what settings I use.
I enabled post processing and even set bloom=255 and still nothing.
I'm using ddfix 1.5.12
also, i'm using thief gold, gtx 580 gpu and 6gig ddr3 memory with i7920 cpu at 4 gigz.
game runs great at 1920x1080, however I'm not getting any added bells and whistles like the bloom effect.
someone please help.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that none of those settings work in Thief 1, but jermi would have to confirm that.
