I had everything ready;
My treasured Thief Dark Project v133 CD, the High-res texture packs, and
the improved model packs.
I was Ready to experience this wonderful game once more. But alas!
The game will not run anymore on my system!
Windows XP SP2
Intel Core2Duo E6700 @ 3.0ghz
2GB Kingstone DDR2 PC9600
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB (169.21)
Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatality Pro
Evga 680i Mobo
Installation went fine, I can start the game, watch the intro movies, enter the menu, choose training/mission, watch the movie, but after I click continue to start playing the game... nothing. Black Screen. I have to Alt+Tab and close the application through the task manager (not responding)
I followed all the tech guides I found on this forum:
1. Used compatibility mode to run the game using a single Core.
2. Got the D3D texture fix "thieffixed.exe" ran it, with the same result as the original Thief.exe (black screen)
3. Downloaded the DDFix file containing another Thief.exe inside, but when I run it, it says "Missing CD, please insert CD into the CD drive" (I have the original Disc!!) I read this file is for Thief Gold, so I guess its not compatible with my version.
4. Got the ddfixG.7z file and unrared into my Thief folder, and ran the file "ddfixGUI.exe" with which I got the following error: ddfixGUI.exe - Application Error. The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application." BTW the ddfixGUI.exe is just a white box icon, like a DOS exe file. Is this correct?
So that's pretty much it. I'm stuck.
I don't know what else to do to get the game to run.
The weird thing is, that I installed it about 5 months ago and it ran fine. Played through the first 3 missions without a problem. But later on I had to reinstall Windows due to a critical crash. Now the game won't Run.
Please Advice!!!

1. Uninstall the game completely.
2. Perform a fresh install.
3. Install Darkloader(if u wanna play fan missions too).
4. Edit Install.cfg so that the CD is not required (If don't know how to do this, then read the previous posts).
5. Download ddfix from timeslip's site. If u have a widescreen monitor, then u need to download the Dark engine widescreen patch also.
6. Apply ddfix using the GUI. Also apply the widescreen patch.
7. Now start the game.
Hope this helps. :D

Thanks for the reply. But this doesn't work.
I still get the black screen.
I tried updating my video drivers to the latest (175.19) from Nvidia, but had no luck.
I also installed the Darkloader app (even though I don't see a reason why this would help...)
Any other ideas?

Nice guide, but this is only for Thief Gold edition, not TDP.
The .exe files are not compatible.
Anyways, I gave up.
I got a friend to lend me his Thief Gold disc, and finally managed to get it going.
Now if only that darn enhancement pack worked........ :erg:

The GUI installer version of DDfix is unreliable rubbish, you should use the manual version.
1. Take the v1.33 fixed EXE and patch it for dual core, as you've already done.
2. Open it in a hex editor and edit the first occurrence of ddraw.dll to ddfix.dll.
As for getting EP to work:-
1. Optimise your installation with Darkloader.
2. Put these two lines into your user.cfg (you may need to create one).
ObjTexture16
MeshTextures16
NOTE: (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1687640#post1687640) The hand textures and models (especially that of the hands grasping the sword) are a warped. To get them to render properly you'll need meshes ripped from Thief 2.
Whether you use (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/patches/) Daemonite's or Orgy's meshes is up to you really.
1. Just download either pack and unzip it to a "mod" directory or something along those line OR rename the ZIP to CRF and then edit your install.cfg (backup it up beforehand though). The former is the simpler solution if you want to use other mods simultaneously, such as Orgy's T2 textures.
2. You want the EP.crf over-ruling everything else.
The way that resname_base works is that order of preference goes from left to right.
Eg
resname_base .\EP\Thief1+.\EP+.\PermanentMods\+.\RES
Also you want to know how to remove the CD check, just comment out the cd_path line in your install.cfg.
Eg
//cd_path I:\

Stay with an ancient PC, like me - one as old as Thief itself.
