Hello!
I'm trying to speedrun Thief Gold using xmodule999's strats. In most cases a bit of knowledge about the game and his videos are enough to help me understand glitches he abuses, but there's one that I can't really understand. This trick is pretty much the only thing keeping me from being able to get a "decent" RTA run. I'm talking about this skip (you can find it at 33m18s if video starts from the beginning).
I can reproduce this, but it's VERY inconsistent for me. Usually, I either die or get kicked out of the tiny space between bars and floor tiles. Sometimes after I get on the other side, I can't reach the lever for some reason. I guess it would be easier to practice this if I actually knew what the hell I am doing. So I'm reaching out to you people, maybe someone here can help me understand this trick. If you are going to test it, I should probably warn you that this might NOT work on NewDark.
One thing I find interesting about all his videos (TDP RTA, Gold RTA, segmented runs) is that he always gets stuck after removing arrow. No matter how hard I try, I can't reproduce this. However, it doesn't seem to be very crucial.

you are playing on an unpatched version of the game right? not just pre new dark. but pre everything.

I'm playing on 1.37 GOG version with ddfix applied. There shouldn't be any fanmade patches applied (apart from ddfix of course)

yeah thats not the version thats being played in that video. thats 1.0.
but even with that said. the glitch IS possible even in newdark, ive seen it on a stream a few months back.
so there might be a setting / fps inconsistency, or something youre doing wrong. itll be hard to replicate without knowing exactly which version and settings were used. and without knowing the exact inputs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Polish Gold retail (that's what he is using apparently) is already patched to latest version. There's no way he is using 1.0, because Gold is using latest TDP as its base.
I know I'm doing something wrong, the problem is I have no idea what. That's why i'd like someone who understands this engine better than I do to try to explain it (if it even is explainable). Can it really be possible for different settings/framerate to have any effect on such thing?

Glad to see another speedrunner!
The Undercover keyholing does work with DDFix. The procedure is very simple but highly random, indeed:
1. Shoot a rope arrow above the portcullis. It has to be very close to it.
2. Climb up the rope and, once on top face away from the portcullis, climb all the way down until you reach the ground and pick your arrow back.
3. Read a papyrus.
4. Once you're back into the game, Garrett will behave differently. You can then move along the slit in the ground where the portcullis lowers, but you will have trouble escaping it which is exactly what you want. Stay in it and move to one side of the portcullis (right seems to work better than left) and lean around.
5. If you lean correctly, which is very random, your head will go through the portcullis.
6. Lean forwards and flip the switch.
7. Lean against the portcullis to get out, which has a chance to kill you.
8. Jump out of the slit and you're done!
Here's a practice video I recorded a while ago:

ive been glitchunting quite a few games for a while now and yes. the internal framerate and even simple settings like AA can have *extreme* effects on game behaviour when youre doing stuff you shouldnt be doing.
sadly this game doesent have any active runners, so itll be hard to find someone who can tell you how to do it. well ill be damned. nevermind then.

Also yes, framerate can have an effect and, in fact, highly influences NPC/Object boosting. The higher the framerate, the more chance you have to succeed and go fly far, far away. This trick isn't used much though.

Apparently I was struggling so hard with this, because I tried keyholing from beneath the rope. Now that I'm moving myself closer to the wall, it's working pretty well and even with bad luck, it's still faster than doing this level intended way. Thanks guys! Hopefully, this thread will help someone in the future.
