Long time since I was here. Good to see you all stuck around while I gorged myself on the Xbox 360 through a 50" plasma :D
I would like to install the Thiefs on my new HP laptop if possible. I'm running a Centrino Dual Core processor (I do recall a permanent fix for dual cores, but could use a pointer to it) with Vista 64 bit OS, 4 gigs RAM, other modern do-dads that were sci-fi when I first met Garrett.
Am I on crack or what? Will any version of Thief work on this machine? The computer is fresh and I'm hesitant to install Thief and the FM loader lest I trash the OS. Most of my favorite (really) older utilities are working fine, but Thief is a far more complicated install, even on the boxes it was designed for.
Any success or failure stories would be appreciated. I know I can't be the first to want to attempt this miracle :p

It's possible, but it seems to vary with each person what works and what doesn't. Search in the technical and legacy forums and maybe you'll find something that works for you. Most of it's still being worked out, especially as people upgrade. Right now, many of us continue to use our older systems for our older games.

I've got T2 running on a quad-core machine that has 64 bit Vista as an operating system.
I'm going to shift this over to the Legacy Tech forum. Check the FAQ there for tips plus a search should pull up lots of threads with info about this.

(pardon the resurrection? but...) I'm running on Vista Ultimate x64 and all the thief games work fine for me.
For the DarkEngine games, use the Widescreen patch and DDFix (in that order), but be aware that if you want to use the DDFix GUI you'll need to either use a machine with XP or run VirtualPC (free download from the Microsoft website) and set up a shared folder with which to patch the exe. This is what I do.
Afterwards, there is no need for any compatibility mode or any other fixes. Just be sure that if you get the thief2 multiplayer patch, you use DDFix and the WS patch on that one as well, each time you update it. Yeah, it's a pain, but it only takes about 3-5 minutes, and the end result is totally worth it.
