Thief 1 + 2: Can't get past menu. :( - by Corvin25

Hi.
So uh, I decided to play through the whole Thief series from beginning to end, 1, 2, and DS. Unfortunately, 1 and 2 seem to be afraid of my computer. And why not, it is incomparably more powerful than when I first played them. :)
The games install perfectly fine. No problem getting them in the correct directories, etc. "Your installation is complete..."
I got past the intro movie, but now I can't get past the menu screen. The game crashes like, the instant I see the main menu appear.
Okay. So I try to fix this by right clicking the .exe and Running it in Compatibility Mode for Windows 95.... The menu pops up, though the graphics go crazy when I scroll my mouse over something.
Level intros play fine.
But then I get into the actual level itself.... nothing but black.
ERROR: Direct3d device driver does not accurately report texture memory usage. Conact your 3d accelerator vendor for updated drivers.
So I go into the Thief 2 user.cfg file and remove the semicolon from ;safe_texture_manager ...
Now when I get into the level, I can't get anything at all. Just a black screen. :(
... This is getting extremely frustrating, as I really want to play these old games.
If anybody has any idea on how to deal with these problems.... kindly speak up. I'm not terribly skilled with computers, and I'm running on a dual core processor, with an 8800GT graphics card.

Ok you need to download and install "DDfix", see this thread - (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117616)
This will fix both the "dual core" and "8800 texture/dithering" problems.
Also download and install the latest directx update and gfx driver

I'm having exactly the same problem and I suspect that it has something to do with updating my video drivers yesterday.
EDIT: OK, I attempted to uninstall my video driver and used an older one which I previously had installed. Still no luck. Am I completely missing something about the way drivers work?
So frustrating.
Does this mean that I now have to use DDfix for TDP, TMA and SS2?

Hi everyone,
I've been having this same problem since I last tried to install Thief Gold a couple of days ago. I'm running a single core processor (P4 3.4 GHz) and a 6800GT. I've tried display drivers as old as 84.56 and as new as the current official ones. I've also tried using the patched .exe file I got from...somewhere.
Everything works fine up through the loadout, then when I click "start mission" or "begin" or what have you, the screen goes black, the low "machinery" sound keeps playing, and then (sometimes) I'll get the "Texture memory usage" error message.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks

I feel silly for not consulting the all knowing Google now.
Thief 2 and System Shock 2 now work after navigating into their folders and adding "safe_texture_manager" to the cam.cfg files.
I haven't tried TDP yet.

I'm having the exact same problem - running Thief 2 on an Intel 3.00 GHz dual core with GeForce 8600GT (driver version 169.21). The main menu shows up normally, I can start a new game, the first mission briefing plays normally, but when the mission itself is supposed to start, the screen goes black and nothing happens. I've enabled Safe Texture Manager (even tried adding it to cam.cfg), installed the alternate version of the Indeo codec given in the FAQ, run the game in Windows 98 (or 95) compatibility mode and used DDFix, but nothing seems to help.
After using DDFix, I noticed that if I start the game in non-compatibility mode, I can get the mission to start, but the graphics are totally messed up and the game crashes as soon as I try to move the mouse.
The really aggravating thing is, when I first installed T2 on this machine (I've only had it for a few weeks), I was able to get it to run - I didn't even need compatibility mode. But when I tried again today, moving the mouse in the main menu messed up the graphics and the game crashed when I tried to start a mission. I've no idea why it suddenly stopped working - I haven't touched the graphics card drivers, DirectX or anything that could conceivably have affected Thief. I've now reinstalled, but the aforementioned black screen problem still persists. Any further suggestions would be most welcome.

Where?

I seem to be having a similar issue, I added the ddfix and all that., set my affinity to single core., but I can only play in 640x480. If I change the res to a higher mode, it completely crashes everytime. I am using nvidia drivers 174.xx and I have a new BFG 9800 GTX OCX.
I have not tried Theif 2
