It's possible to be friendly with Freedom and Duty simultaneously. If you'll choose to become a *member* of Freedom, bandits and mercenaries will become neutral, Duty and scientists will become enemies. That's it.

How to you become a member of freedom? I've done all their missions but I haven't seen any way to join yet.

The trick is to make all Freedom members friendly BEFORE first meet with Lukash.
You need to accomplish 'protect border outpost' quest, after the quest is accomplished Freedom members become friendly. Then you go to Lukash and tell him about Duty's small camp, accomplish the quest he gives, then yet another quest about traitor, and then when you talk to Lukash next time you become a member. There won't be any special mention of it, but your alliance status in PDA will change to Freedom.
I think devs didn't want it happen as they deliberately removed ability to ally with factions in the final version, but they overlooked this small trick.

Having Monolith as buddies would completely spoil the gameplay in final phases.

What about another ending where you join monolith and kick some military arse, modders anyone?
Shadow on 22/5/2007 at 07:13
Uh, that kind of IS one of the endings, except it's the ending and you don't get to "kick military ass" because the game kind of ends...
steo on 22/5/2007 at 12:33
It would have to be a little different from that ending for you to get monolith on your side and be able fight alongside them.
