That's ridiculous. Graphics quality and gameplay aren't mutually exclusive and this isn't a zero-sum game. I'm so sick of hearing this argument.
They are mutually exclusive when you are not making Madden or Call of Battlefield. When you make a game that tries to appeal very strongly to a very specific group, good graphics are too expensive. Everyone insists on paying the same for a game that took 50 million to develop as they do for a game that took 50 thousand to develop. So a game that has good, expensive graphics can't have good gameplay, because it needs to compromise everything in order to appeal to the largest group. You can't do one specific thing well, you can only do everything poorly, because that's the only way you can cover your losses. It's better to meet the expectations of millions halfway and disappoint thousands, than it is to meet the expectations of thousands completely and never appeal to the millions.

What he says isn't entirely false, though, but it has more to do with actual content rather than gameplay itself.

The great graphics/great gameplay combo seems to work ok for Arkane.
(Note for Thiefgen regulars: They've developed games in the past 10 years, you might not be familiar with them.)

I've emerged from Thief - I'm playing Dishonored now. I'm rubbish, High Chaos everywhere. :)

You get better at it, especially on a 2nd playthrough. The final level is really different.

I'm getting better already as I did have a Low Chaos on one level after I discovered the stranglehold. I knew I'd be pretty bad so I have left a lot to do for when I'm comfortable with the controls and don't have to look every few seconds to see what I'm doing.
And I'm finding it hard remembering that I can't hide in shadows. But I'm really enjoying it and so glad I was given it as a present. Expanding horizons is good for the soul.

It's really all about line of sight (something I'm well experienced with, thank you 15 years of Metal Gear Solid) and you want to take advantage of the fact that you can get above the guards, because they rarely look up.
Other than that, I find the stealth aspect to have a lot of the "feel" of Thief, just with better controls.

It's really only thanks to Dia who started it, and Al_B who finished it, that I can actually play Dishonored in the first place. I have been a bit hampered by a very old machine. But now I have something a bit beefier, I'm hoping to get to play quite a few different games, including the new Thief, at some point. Possibly. I've been relying on Fan Missions for years but even some of those were getting a bit difficult recently.
I was hoping there might be a Sold Out copy of Thief in a year or so for a £5 (as I found for TDP and TMA) but looks like that's not going to happen. Maybe a Steam sale now I'm all grown up and use Steam.

Thief is on GoG, $10 a pop. Worth a try over there if you'd rather that -- I know I do. I like Steam and all but certain old games I think I prefer to get off GoG.
