I'm sure they'd love for it to support their social network business model, but we still don't know how any of this is going to pan out. We're not in worst case scenario territory yet.

Gamer was on last night. How fortuitous. (I got bored after he got free and I've never seen the end).

I imagine they'll come out with some kind of sphere-camera, like they have on the tops of Google maps cars, with speakers, maybe a mugshot screen, and you stick that on your computer or on the couch & that's your friend's access point.

I like the people online who are going into full tinfoil hat mode at the news: OMG, Facebook will turn the Oculus Rift into a datamining device! Are those people aware that FB already has a much more effective datamining device with insanely more reach than OR will ever have, i.e. Facebook?
That's not to say that there isn't anything to worry about here, but people need a reality check.

Facebook just isn't cool. Neither is advertising the amazing anti-winkle cure doctors have been keeping secret but discovered by a 42 year old hockey mum, which can be yours for only $20.
That's the problem. Not privacy. What are we buying into? A cool product or knock down price bill board space we can strap directly on to our face.

That's the genius of targeted advertising don't you know. Only get information on stuff you really are likely to want, like how lazy skinny guys get ripped because you're male, or info on that thing you already bought last week.
You won't believe the kind of next level algorithms necessary to do all that.
