(

I'm having an "argument" with my girlfriend as to the quality of her art (with whom things are going much better, thanks in no small part to the great advice I got here not too long back).
I created a poll on my "blog" that makes it incredibly easy (one click, no name no nothing) so if anyone is so inclined, check it out and give a quick thumbs up/down. This is hardly an extensive piece of work, just a cute little sketch she did for a webcomic she wants to make that she thought was terrible and I thought was adorable (the little drawing she did for me on the back made it all the more so, but I didn't post it yet). It took far too much wrangling to keep her from trashing it.
Yes, many of you might point out the relative dumbness of this type of poll, but she's got low self-esteem (which I'm trying to fix - maybe to my own detriment), and if I can get a ton (a relative term) of people to vote on this, it might help. Visiting her DA (yeah, I know - link right at top of blog post) wouldn't hurt, even if you don't look through it. Very little there since she hides/destroys most of her stuff.

Poll, blog, dispute over the internet, you lost me right there buddy.
Good.
Next?

You couldn't have picked a worse picture for that poll. The stuff on her DA is far less worthy of ridicule.

I disagree, the DA pics are just less anime-ish, but otherwise worse. The pic to poll on is a ok, but rotate it fhs.
And don't tell your GF she's a great artist when she's really not and has enough grip on reality to acknowledge it.

True, but that was the piece in question specifically. Clearly it isn't a masterpiece, because it was just a little sketch, but her near disdain for it seemed pretty absurd to me. She's at least reasonably confidant with what she actually posts on her DA (else she wouldn't post it), but I cant find anything overly wrong with her little sketch, or why it would deserve to be thrown away. Sorry if that point got lost in my obviously too long post.
Feedback is appreciated regardless.

I probably use the word great too liberally, but I've not actually been personally telling her shes a great artist. I think its a great sketch just because I'm a layman when it comes to art, and I'm biased. I just don't think she's terrible or untalented, which she thinks (or at least says, perhaps fishing for compliments). But, true she's definitely not a great artist (yet), but I still maintain that it is at least good, and not utter crap, and not unworthy of continuing.
Yeah, and sorry about rotation, cant fix it now without changing links, re uploading and creating new poll.

I liked the pastels. The "Pastel Rose" piece was very well done. I liked how her use of color complemented the rose. For the the vase and bust picture I think she could've sharper object edges. It's better than some amateur art I've seen that's for sure.
As for the piece in question, I think there's far too much anime art out there these days and maybe that's why she decided/is deciding to toss it out. In my opinion, it's hard to be original using that type of art style. As I stated already, it is better than some of the things I've seen though and I'd qualify it as a decent sketch.

Since you mention it, I read your relationship thread. There you said something to the effect that she needed your help and you were smarter than her and her friends. Now you're trying to fix her low self esteem. Now don't get this the wrong way, but have you thought about looking for someone who's en par with you?

Yeah, disregard that, I'm not sure what I was getting at and it comes off entirely wrong. I should delete it (I was in a strange mood when I posted it), but I'm too lazy. I'm fairly sure I "took it back" later on anyways, so don't read too much into that statement.

Alright, nvm then. :)

To expound on my comment on the poll page:
The line work is very solid. Everything's in good proportion, and aside from some weirdness with the too-spread-apart lines on the open palm, I have no complaints in that department.
The pose, on the other hand, has some issues. The left arm is locked straight, and is sticking out at a strange angle. The same can be said for the waving hand. Fingers locked straight, and spread so far apart, it seems unnatural. She also seems to be locked into a 2d plane. Some foreshortening on the arms would probably help give a more relaxed looking pose.
But that's all picky stuff. It's obviously not a terrible drawing, just maybe a little generic looking in a Clamp sort of way.
One of my favorite bits of Creative advice is "You're allowed to make crap. It's okay. You can go back and refine later, and even if you don't, it's still practice."
