Nah, I disagree - there's always been cutesy games out there. That doesn't change the fact that people think Fallout 4's graphics look severely outdated. Different standards for different games and genres.

What? People think Fallout 4 looks outdated?

Loved Half Life 2. Could never get through Half Life 1.
I'm with you, I liked HL2 better than HL1. The first one was definitely solid and one of the best FPSes ever, no doubt, but I liked the sheer variety of HL2. PHysics puzzles, driving sections, turret-defense, grav gun, squad-management etc. By the time you got bored of a single mechanic it pitched a whole new one at you. Well, except the hoverboat, that shit was way too long -_-

2.unity asset store
Interesting, what makes you say that? The asset store is definitely a hit and miss with terrible search, but if you pick the right assets it can be a lot of help. Thank god I didn't have to (re)create my own UI system for the nth time on Karaski (that was before Unity UI). Plus no one forces you to use it.

Anyone else thinks minecraft is some sort of tragic event? I mean look at this game (
http://store.steampowered.com/app/367450/)
and read fans cheering how "adorable" it looks. Adorable? For a game's visuals? Something pixellated and low poly means "adorable" now?
Huh, did you paste the right link? It leads to Polybridge, which I actually think looks great. IT's simple, sure, but stylish and polished.
RE minecraft: I dont think it's fair to blame a single (good) game for the unintended side effect of horrible asset-flippers and lazy game devs. If it wasn't minecraft (or unity asset store) someone else would've done that, it was just a matter of time given how increasingly easier gamedev is getting.
Out of curiosity, do you also dismiss modern 16bit platformers (i.e. ShovelKnight, Mega Man 9) for the pixely artstyle? Personally, it doesn't bug me and we still have enough gamers where the nostalgic charm hits the spot.

3.ttlg's reaction to thief3 and thief4
I don't think Deadly Shadows is an outright terrible game, but the reboot most certainly is. It's a buggy piece of crap with disappointing gameplay, cringeworthy writing and uninspired art direction. I have no idea why one would expect it to get a different reception on a LGS fan forum, especially when everywhere else it got a lukewarm reception at best and a nearly universal evisceration at worst.
froghawk on 20/11/2015 at 02:56
Deadly Shadows is great and deserves a lot more credit than it gets. Yes, the engine is garbage and holds the game back in a lot of ways, but basically all of my complaints about it are due to engine constraints rather than design choices.
But nu thief? That was clearly a game that had 10 different directions during development and they never quite settled on one. It's unfinished at best, like playing an alpha build of a game that hasn't totally settled on what it wants to be or bothered to fix bugs / hone gameplay mechanics / tighten plot and pacing / etc. It certainly doesn't feel like a AAA effort in any way.

Tragedy? World of Warcraft. It's runaway success singlehandedly killed a genre and killed Blizzard North.
Huh?
Manwe on 20/11/2015 at 13:05
Since we're not actually talking about tragedies but things we just don't like: Call of Duty, Mobas (and multiplayer games in general) and peanut butter.
Also Flux, I personally didn't comment on Solarix for the simple reason that I didn't play it. And I didn't play it simply because it didn't seem like a game worth playing. Now I don't know if that's a failure of the game itself or lack of good PR on your part, but that's how I felt about it at the time of its release.
So there, is that the sort of criticism you wanted to hear? It's not easy to do it, like most people here I have a lot of respect for indie devs. But maybe you're right and we should be more vocal about it. In any case like Sulphur, I hope that doesn't discourage you from making other games.

Second that. Just because your first attempt doesn't work out. Don't let that stop you from trying again Flux. That or keep working on Solarix until it's at a "finished" state that's truly polished and gets attention.
Though often it's better to take a break from it all for a bit, then when your refreshed, take a good look at all and take in all the criticism and work out where you could go better the next time round.
I often feel that the best game I ever worked on, "Bipolar", never got the attention, sales, or praise it deserved, but that's just the way things often go. Plus we all fall in love with our own creations and don't see thing's in the same light that everyone else does. Human nature.
In my case, it got me a few interviews at games companies who loved it, so I can't complain too much. A job in the games industry was all I ever really wanted out of it. Money's never the end goal when it comes to that stuff really. Or in my case anyway.

I've yet to play Solarix Flux, but I was gifted it by Brethren who wanted to push it to fellow TTLGers, so while the enthusiasm may be muted versus a AAA effort, it has at least been sincere. Once I've played it, I'll give a review in the relevant thread. I may not be the best person to do so though, since I have little spare time and my attention doesn't hold easily, but I'll do it.
[EDIT] Worst tragedy in gaming history? No sequel to Freedom Fighters.
