Lolwut? I mean, if you're going to dismiss Half-Life's plot, at least do it with "Halt the ongoing disaster you trigger in the beginning." Escaping is the plot of just the first few levels.

I'm sorry zajazd, but I have to fully agree with Pyrian. If you're going to dismiss HL's plot, you should probably do a better job.
Now here's the point where I'd be inclined to tell you to go back & replay the game... but I won't do that here. Now this might be due to my experience in playing these types of games a lot... I'm not sure. Because as long as you payed attention to all the details & listened carefully to all the NPC chatter... then HL's plot shouldn't have been that hard to follow at all.

The story of the HL games is a bit frustrating, as it's a series of endless diversions. Every time they're about to actually fill in a plot point, something happens where you need to run away or time freezes or something. Plot is quite scant...

Yup, the plot of the original Half-Life game was quite thin. HL2 fills in the back story of HL1, particularly through Vortigaunt conversations. The episodes fill in more. I think we sometimes project our knowledge of the Half-Life story backward. Because at the time we played the original game, there wasn't much there yet. Nevertheless, I think a lot of us were looking for some kind of closure to that epic adventure, and instead we got a silly boss battle that seemed totally out of place in the best FPS we had ever played and then we finally meet the G-man and it's like Huh? What?

Probably a good chapter-by-chapter overview of the story in HL1 on the net I found would be at this link:

Instead of tying up any loose ends the game had... the ending we got was a really bad nintendo boss battle followed by the gman & his utter nonsense. And we're back to why I listed the game as my
"I wish it had turned out differently" choice. The ending was outright lazy & showed extreme incompetence on valve's part. Sure they fixed a lot of the story in part 2, but by that time it was too late IMO.

Eh? I think the story actually held together better before HL-2 expanded it. Then you could presume that the G-man - wandering around just out of reach in several places - was the administrator whose insistence triggered the crisis, and was directly and highly involved with one or more government agencies. Instead he's some interdimensional merc lord? That kind of came out of nowhere, IMO.
And ending with a boss battle was fine, too. It was just a crappy boss battle. And some of the Xen levels were pretty bad, too. I liked Xen in Blueshift much better.

Xen gets a lot flak, but I'm sure I recall Residue Processing being my least favourite part. Dull to look at, and lots of tedious climbing around bits of machinery and vats of sludge.

And then there are the one's that never get mentioned. Like the "hell" in Doom 1 not really looking like Hell's often envisioned. Fixed somewhat in Doom 3.
That said the textures of Hell seeping through to the real world (inside the bases on Phobos) looked pretty awesome back in the day. You also have to give them some slack considering the point in time the games came out + the technologies present.

I've always seen Half-Life 1's plot as being essentially just a stylish retelling of Doom anyway.

Ending, not story. The ending made more sense after HL2 but the rest of the plot suffered by comparison.
