Now that DDFix supports texture replacement in the SS2 version of the Dark Engine, I suppose it's inevitable that someone expects someone to do a high-res revamp of the world textures.
The thing is, SS2 has a hell of a lot of world textures. Literally thousands of them. So replacing them all just isn't going to happen, especially without a professional art team on tap. So what I'm proposing here is that we compile a list of the textures that would provide a clear improvement to the look of SS2 by being upgraded-- the most commonly used, the most egregiously awful. No need to list tech screen textures... (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124592) SHEMP already has that covered.
So bring it! Screenshots encouraged.

A round of applause for the Zylon taking an initiative here :D
Come now people lets bring something to the table.

But SHTUP looks great already.
Nameless Voice on 22/10/2010 at 16:37
SHTUP is for object textures - he's talking about world textures, which SHTUP never touched.
ZylonBane on 22/10/2010 at 16:40
Well, it does touch them a little. Not much though.

..completed 3 runs of ss2 recently, and basically, the only major ugliness I ran into was this:

Inline Image:
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8634/screenshot34o.th.pngthe cutlery really looks like a bad import from some early dos game (and it is partially broken as well, transparent when it shouldn't be,see the pic).if you cannot fix it,just nuke it,nobody will cry.
some minor stuff (not sure if it fits the "world textures" category, but whatever):
-water.it looks very dated.
-piles of disgusting worms.they would deserve an update, annelid goo style.
-botm.meaty caverns are definitely not something the dark engine handles well.not sure if better textures would help.
-computer screens in stripped levels (yeah,I know you said there is no need to mention this one.whatever).
the rest of the game looks fine to me-with ddfix,shtup,adaob030,tacticool and rebirth loaded,of course.

I have to agree about the meaty caverns and crawlspaces....they look more like wallpaper than anything you could describe as meaty.
As far as SHTUP goes, will you be continuing with that first or diverting more attention to the ddfix related stuff?

The hanging kitchen tools is an object, and thus in SHTUP's purview. The transparency is actually fine in stock SS2... the last revision of ADaOB somehow broke it but we couldn't figure out how.
The best fix for the cutlery would be to individually model each item, but that would be a lot of work for something that's only used maybe twice in the entire game.

I'd really prefer to push out another SHTUP release. I haven't even touched SHTUP in a looong time. First there was the SHEMP diversion which chewed up a few months, then I bought my first house a year ago, and over the last couple months I've been doing battle migrating to a new computer with Windows 7 64-bit on it. So I'm still sitting on those great food models you did and an amazing updated toilet mesh that Ajare did.

I actually loved this, rarely do we ever get full transparency, because alpha testing and especially sorting is just expensive even in this day, It's good stuff, but like everything else it's lowres
so it's either, replace every texture in the game, or leave them as they are.
Style-unity is more important than fidelity.

I think we have to wait until the source code project codes in curved surfaces or phong shading on terrains too, for that one to really do justice to the idea (if my vague technical know how serves)
