In a recent game where I've been playing through with only low-tech and demolitions I've discovered (through the assitance of the wonderful walton simons) a phenomenal use of the throwing knives. There may only be a handful of them in the game, but each one has the potential to turn any scripted encounter into a carefree run in with stupified NPC.
Basically it works like this, in any of the instances where an npc runs up to you as a friendly to have a converstation where, upon it's completion, they go hostile, you can prevent them from ever going hostile (ex: gunther in the basement of the cathedral, either run in with simons, maggie chow in the UC room). This is done by timing a knife throw such that they start the converstation before the knife hits them. Each NPC will start a convo once they've gotten close enough, so all you have to do is throw right before they get in range. They will reach that range and start talking to you while the knife travels through the air, then it will hit them and the conversation will end without the NPC going hostile, and they won't try to start it again. You can then dispose of them at your will (though they do act like standard friendies who get upset with you if you shoot them enough, go hostile for a while, then go back to friendly). Makes certain areas of the game open to a lot more interesting scenarios.

Like, for example, the bit just before
you are captured by Gunther?
Seems like it would be a lot easier (if potentially more hazardous) to do the same thing with a LAM.
Here's something oddball you can do-- in the gas station rescue mission, chuck a LAM at Tiffany immediately before talking to Jock to end the mission. If it takes her out, you'll get Jock's "Oh no Tiffany's dead scrub the mission!" speech as you're flying away.

I actually did manage to do it with a tnt crate, a lam would work too if you could judge the distance right (which is a pain since lams bounce all over the place)... basically anything that will interupt the conversation.

Yeah, sure, it would work there, but why?
That was one of the most disappointing parts of any video game ever for me. I went through reloading my game so dang many times my first run through, and when I
finally managed to wax all of the other troops/bots, I find out that Gunther is invincible. LAME. So then I reload and focus on stealthing out. Jock still won't take off. So then I kill all but Gunther and evade Gunther. Jock STILL won't take off. That scene....
A cool thing with Lebedev and Anna:
Is before you speak to Lebedev in the plane, secure a LAM to the wall where Anna runs in. Instant death for Anna.
I'll play devil's advocate for a moment... One could consider your inability to accept the fate at hand
being captured/killed by Gunther in Battery Park
as lame, right? Sorry... don't blame the game for having a plot, that's all. I think Warren has mentioned how much he would have preferred not to have had any part of the game force the player into one course of action, but I don't remember where. However, I don't think it was "LAME," since the plot moves along just fine after that incident. Sometimes the plot doesn't unfold the way you want, but that's just a matter of taste. The game turned out just fine, right? :)

I've noticed some people referring to the results of LAM-mining Anna as her "becoming a ghost." I figured this is as good a place as any to note that I noticed that that is not true at all. It's that she cloaks and runs away after she takes a certain amount of damage. I did it recently, and then chased her down, shot her in the back of the head with my pistol as she ran, after which she fell and blew up.

I don't mind getting you-know-what by you-know-who, but there could at least be a reason for it. What I find lame is that I can get away without anyone knowing or caring and still need to get captured. I also find it lame that I can clean house and still need to get captured.
Getting captured doesn't bother me. Being forced to turn myself in to people who aren't even after me does, as does being forced to turn myself in to a bunch of corpses. :tsktsk:
