(
http://www.ventnorbrewery.co.uk/cask.html) ventnor golden bitter is one of my favourites although today I'm drinking tanglefoot.
I've started trying to brew my own but haven't quite got past messing about with kits to work out what I actually want in a beer

Another vote for a local company, I'm quite partial to (
http://www.uplandbeer.com/amber.html) Upland Amber. Of course, that's the one that none of the local restaurants keep in stock (for whatever reason). Bad Elmer's Porter isn't bad, either.

The Chimay was only £5 for a 75cl bottle when I was up there, admittedly not it the bars. The only place that served it insisted upon sticking it in the fridge.
Never seen the Viz cartoon you've mentioned, but have seen the sort that go round with a half pint between six of them and take notes and small tastes of all the beers. Never understood that, a half is fine then, but drink it and taste it properly.
We sell it £3.50 for a 33cl bottle :erg: We also keep it in the fridge, but right down at the bottom where it's chilled but never cold.
You can always recognise the Real Ale types before they've even ordered: look for any/all of long leather coats, long hair + brimmed hat, handkerchief tucked into pocket or rotary blazers. At least we don't serve the stuff from cask, it keeps the hardcores away.

especially as the Chimay is eye-wateringly expensive and is bought primarily in St Andrews by people who scarily resemble Viz's Real Ale Twats.
Sorry to shatter your fantasy of all people who like the taste of something that isn't tapped from the sewage outlet of a brothel lavatory in arbroath, but I
just drink the cunt.

I'm sure you do. My point was that St Andrews is full of dickheads irrespective of whether they drink ale or not. I drink lager when I want to refresh myself (ie after work) and ale when I'm out drinking and don't want 6 identical pints.

(
http://www.oultonales.co.uk/) Oulton's Sunrise is a bit of a hit at the moment - yummy summer hedgerow beer. East Anglia = beer heaven \o/. That Trappist stuff is alright to sip, but a bit sickly by the time you're halfway through a bottle. It's not really ale if it's been in a fridge.
