Twisty - I think if you just ignore the question marks on the map and follow the quests, you'll still get a very fun and absorbing game. I put at least 150 hours into it despite my above complaints. The characterisation and detail really is second to none.

Finally arrived at Skellige. Lovely place. And I absolutely agree with faetal. I like the game a lot, though I think I would've loved it to absolute bits 10-20 years ago. My gaming needs have changed a bit, which isn't The Witcher 3's fault - and due to the sheer richness and generosity of the game it's become my favourite single-player game I've played this year, even if I'm not entirely bowled over by the gameplay.

@ faetal. We'll I've definitely enjoyed those aspects so far as well but probably have spent too much time engaged in random exploring (which is what I did in the other two and any game where it is worth doing so). Although after foraging around for plants for ages and still being unable to cook up a decent concoction, it started to drag and I went back tackling the main quest again.
I'm currently in an underground area with swamp ghouls, toxic fog a few other unsavoury undead types, and having just reached a golem blocking my way out, just realised that my level is too low for the area (L3, should be 6). I died on my first attempt but think that I should be able to take him down by using Kries to my advantage.

If I'm craving a game like ESIV:Oblivion but with actually good writing and more mature themes, does W3 fit the bill?
Ostriig on 17/11/2016 at 20:14
Not quite. The writing and themes, yes, in my opinion, but it's not as systemic and freeform gameplay-wise. The way you interface with the world is more prescribed, think GTA V or Dragon Age 3, don't expect to go around dropping random clutter on pressure plates or putting buckets on people's heads. Combat and progression are very different, as well.
I'd spend time with TW3 over Oblivion any day of the week, it was my game of last year, but if you're very particular about what you want maybe check out some gameplay footage first.

While I agree with Ostriig, if you are looking for good writing ad mature themes in an open-world, more realistic fantasy setting, definitely get Witcher 3. It does all of that.
PigLick on 18/11/2016 at 02:15
Yeh it has one of the best fantasy settings in a game. You really feel like you are in the world of Grimm Tales. Its not a sandbox world in the sense that the Elder Scrolls games are though.

The game's definitely my favourite RPG in years and one of my favourite games this year, but I am finding the lead-up to the end one of the weaker parts. For me,
the Battle of Kaer Morhen
and the quests leading up to it were a high point, but the ones that follow suffer from bad pacing, as far as I'm concerned. I'm now at a point where I want to get to the end - not so that the game ends, but because the story demands some urgency at this point - but I'm doing what feels like busywork.

Ah, but you've got the expansions waiting for you :)
They're both absolutely fantastic.
