Well I just jumped back into the game after a bit of a break, wrapping up the Bloody Baron quest and Keira Metz line. Still haven't even entered any of the big cities, so I think I'll take a break from all the rural and nature hikes and finally check out Oxenfurt and Novigrad
And, oh man, big
awesome point was the Forefather's Eve quest, called Dziady in Polish. What is sadly lost for most foreign players is that the whole ritual is a big part of Polish folklore and was the subject of (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dziady_(poem)) one of our most famous literary works by Adam Mickiewicz. It was so cool to hear the gathered villagers chant the famous lines we all memorized as little kids in school:
Glucho Wszedzie, Cicho Wszedzie, Co To Bedzie, Co to Bedze?(The English translation does not do it justice, but that's Poetry for you)
Also, I just realized I have a
major gripe with the side-questy ? markers - there simply is TOO many of them. At first it was cool and "wow this game has so much to offer." But now it's just goddamn tedius. I have to check them out if I want to find all the Places of Power (and thus, gain crucial ability points) or encounter occasional interesting quest, BUT literally 90% of them are fluff bandits/monster nest/mediocre loot.
I know they wanted the world to be full of stuff and explorable, but they could've seriously done away with like 70% of them and not lost anything. Or just use a different one for pure filler so you know you can skip them.

Yeah, I can get behind that. It's even more annoying in Skellige, where maybe more than half of the ?s are underwater smuggler's caches / spoils of war.
And thanks for telling us about Dziady Yakoob :)

The markers are tedious, but that said you shouldn't feel obliged to explore every one of the. If you do a majority of the quests that appear in your log Geralt's going to be fairly strong by the end of the game (and quite OP mid-game).
Plus the most important of those markers can be revealed by obtaining treasure maps, while others while eventually crop up as locations in other quests.

Holy shit is twirl+the endurance based regen concoction OP. Now all I need to do is press a button and suddenly all of Geralt's health will come back instantly. Its how I was able to kill a cyclops 10 levels higher than me. It basically makes the entire game on god mode.
Malf on 17/7/2015 at 22:52
Yeah, I purposely avoided using a twirl build on my second, Deathmarch play-through because it's so overpowered.
I still used the concoction, but I didn't use twirl, instead using more signs. I didn't get entire health bars back immediately, but enough health to cope while still keeping certain encounters a challenge.
But as with both previous Witcher games, this one suffers from being incredibly difficult at the start, but incredibly easy later on.

Finished this last night. Phenomenal, what a romp! A new gold standard for action RPGs in my book, if we get another contender for GOTY in the next months, 2015 will have proven a great year for videogames. I mean, it's not perfect, what is, but I just can't think of any more compelling a title in a long while. Just pre-ordered the expansions, can't see myself not wanting to play them.

Just beat it, and there's a MAJOR retcon from the books that occurs during the game's finale...hell, even within the game as they refer to events from the book:
In the books, Ciri is NOT the one who can open the gate between worlds. She is only capable of teleporting herself. In fact, her control over space and time is relatively weak in and of itself. The reason why everyone wants at her is because her son is destined to be the one who is capable of forcing open the gates between worlds and enabling inter-planar travel on a large scale. The Aen Elle elves weren't interested in her for her own power, they were literally trying to breed her so that they would have control over the destined seed.
Yes. Everyone is, very literally, interested in Ciri for the contents of her trousers.Haven't read the books, I think VH did say on here that was supposed to be the angle before the game's release, but something else confuses me with this scene -
why is it necessary to trigger a "conjunction" to beat this White Frost in the first place? It's still just something in a different world, right? And since it's only Ciri who's going in, can't she just skippity-hop to it without opening the "big" portal, like she normally does? I beat the game quite late at night, I think I missed something there.
Ostriig on 19/7/2015 at 15:27
Are you saying that maybe those two were playing it by ear, just seizing the opportunity? I had thought that it was implied that was Avalach's plan all along, to get rid of Eredin so that he could safely harness Ciri's abilities to send her to "defeat" the White Frost without risking the Wild Hunt popping in to interrupt. Don't get why it's necessary to get a whole conjunction going to achieve that, though, so I thought that maybe I missed an explanation somewhere.
Malf on 19/7/2015 at 15:54
You know, all this talk of conjunctions reminded me. During the race to the tower with Yen, buttloads of contract-worthy monsters appeared. I was hoping that end game would spawn a load more contracts based on them running wild. I was a tad disappointed when that proved not to be the case :(

I was sort of surprised when the strawberry shortcake had to be made all over again, especially when I followed the recipe to the letter. It was a pretty devastating choice because I'd counted on it being ready for the bake-off but now I had to do a quick lemon meringue pie instead, and there was no time to do anything else - how the hell was I going to win? But it turned out all right in the end because the game's decision tree boiled down to how fast I could throw it at the judge anyway, and he died of surprise so it was resolved well enough.
