The way to play System Shock 2... - by limitz

(I have done a search and found nothing obviously similar on the first few pages).
I was wondering how people set-up their System Shock 2 experience.
I think the best way it to only play with all the lights switched off, and your speakers up fairly loud. I think once I have completed it on 'Normal', I am going to try the 'Hard' difficulty level, but ALSO, I will challenge myself to never use the auto save and auto load features. So, if I die, I will have to go back to where I have used a body reproduction unit thingy (or whatever they are called).
Does anyone currently not use the auto-save function?
Cheers.

I never use the auto-saves in any game, quick saves and/or manual saves work much better. ;)
And I use headphones, much better to increase the scare factor.

If I remember right. SS2 supports EAX so it should support 4 speaker surround minimum.
Nothing like hearing that tortured "Run!" from behind you followed by the sickening thud of pipe against flesh!

I play it like any other game. When it's dark outside I turn on the light, because looking at a PC screen in a dark room makes my eyes hurt. When I'm playing it during the day though I make it a little darker.
But hell, games like Doom 3 require some real effort to actually make it scary. System Shock 2 just has a great atmosphere and it doesn't require me to turn off some lights in my room to find it scary (or at least unsettling).

The thing I'm struggling over is whether to believe speakers are better or whether to go with my gut and say headphones are better. I have a feeling that speaker sound gets degraded over the distance it has to travel and it also interferes with ambiant noise though in an ideal model it should be better, if you use EAX and all that, but from experience, I just hear more and I hear more clearly out of a good pair of headphones, though you lose some directionality. On the other hand, ears are stereo transducers anyway so anything that speakers can do should be possible with headphones as well.

i play it solely in the dark, with headphones. i abuse the quicksave+quickload (especially if i'm about to try something daring and/or stupid), but i refuse to use the QBRM. (next time through i'll change that habit)
hence i play it in the winter, when it's darker longer. also, i can usually finish the game in about 8 nights- at a rate of one deck a night, the entirety of the rickenbacker on the 7th night, and botm+shodan on the 8th.

SORRY LADS I meant not using the quick saves or quick loads as well. So basically you can never save or load, you can only use a quantum biostruction unit or whatever they called:)

On higher difficulty levels you'd run out of nanites pretty quickly with that play style.

I have a lot of fun cheating to give myself an assault rifle and tons of ammo, that way I get to be an action hero.

Action heros that cheat, heh, sounds familiar. ;)
