What are people's thoughts on McCain's pick for vice-president? Like most of Republican party these days, it seems to me it's mostly about electioneering rather than governing. Given McCain's age, it doesn't seem clever to make someone with zero experience of washington or international politics a
stroke away from the presidency.
But hey, she's a woman and might win over some angry Hillary supporters.
I see what you did there :thumb:

What the fuck are you talking about?

And you expect better from whom? I also love how you make sweeping generalizations like they are fact, its precious. Who would you want if you could have anyone? Would you even vote for that person if they ran or would you just shit on them? How can you
know that anyone else would do better? People act like Obama has no substance, but how can you really quantify that during the election, you never really
know what anyone is going to do so you kind of have to go by their tone and their speeches (in which Obama is regarded as HISTORY MAKING). What the fuck more do you want?
I think that some people won't feel you have experience unless you've been president of another world superpower before. I also think most Christians would call jesus the antichrist if he did come back, you just cant please some people.

When it comes to politics, you have do appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Are you kidding? They'd have that guy nailed to a bunch of boards faster than you could say "Jehovah." Some of that may be because his appearance would signify the end of times, though.

Eh, this angle will get a lot of press but it isn't going to happen. Palin is the opposite of Hillary on the social issues Hillary's supporters care about.
Palin is an interesting VP pick that isn't going to play out real well in reality, and in fact nerfs most of the lines of attack McCain's been using against Obama as of late. This doesn't functionally change the race dynamic one bit.

One has to admire his cynicism. Obviously he thinks the Obama-Hillary rift isn't fully healed, and that there are still plenty of disaffected females up for grabs. Presumably if Clinton was the nominee, he'd be picking a negro veep right about now.
Still, it pretty much nullifies one of his main lines of attack: Obama's inexperience. He's criticised Barack for his lack of foreign policy experience, then picks someone as his running mate whose foreign policy experience extends as far as asking the Alaska national guard to cull some elk.

Wow. I've been lurking here until now, but I can't resist responding to that. Choosing a president based on their tone and their speeches is stupid. They tell us very little, if anything, about how a person will govern. In fact, most of the typical things Americans use to choose a president are pretty stupid: speeches that the candidates don't even write, rehearsed sound bites delivered in debates, negative TV ads, media buzz.
You can cross your fingers, hope, and pray that Obama will be effective but I won't. After seeing how GWB turned out, I'm not prepared to vote for another lightweight. Hell, even Bill Clinton took a full term to put together a well functioning administration with capable people in his cabinet. Like Biden said, the presidency is no place for on the job training (paraphrasing).
What more do I want? I want a proven leader with executive experience who is pragmatic and cooperative, who is guided by the ideals and principles this nation was founded on but at the same time not blinded by them, and whose sense of duty is stronger than their personal loyalties and political ambitions. Maybe Colin Powell.
There was a time when I could have voted for McCain despite his lack of executive experience. But that was before he sold out, and before he started showing hints of impending senility. So count me in the "we're doomed" camp.

There are tons of female suburbanite
independants in play. This pick will help with that large demographic, and that has little to do (directly) with any Obama-Clinton rift.
As for the experience bit, any inexperience on the part of a presidential candidate is much more immediately concerning (and exploitable) then that of an inexperienced VP. Handled correctly, that holds true even in cases like this where the presidential candidate on her side is 111 years old and exhaling dust.

While I agree you've got to look beyond speeches, you are absolutely incorrect if you think speeches don't reveal anything about how someone would govern. Historically, great speech givers have tended to be good leaders, because the ability to communicate effectively is crucial to leadership.

True, except that Obama has now spent the better part of a year building the case that he is qualified for the job. Palin has two months.

Thats actually kind of what I meant. I'm not sure why I said it like I did. I always chuckle about that, when you see people like Hagee out there supporting the war I have to laugh that they still consider themselves morally above the rest of us. Also laugh at "pro-life" only referring to abortion and not actually saving/not taking lives.
Jesus is like the biggest hippy in the world, if he came back and said he was Jesus they would kill him, and if he tried to be jesus under a different name they would crucify him for being the antichrist.

That's a good point. Also, since independents are what they are playing for here it may also prove to be pertinent.
