So...I see no Mexican city in your travel plan :(...

The Grand Canyon is nice, but pretty over-rated. Now, Bryce Canyon was awesome. Devil's Tower, on the other hand, is exactly as awesome as advertised, if not more so.
Chicago's a five hour drive from Bloomington, IN but Indianapolis is only one...
Don't kill yourself driving from Toledo to New Jersey all in one go, it's at least nine hours (three to cross OH, six more to cross PA) Stop in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, or Philadelphia on the way. But then, you'll probably be facing drives of that length the whole trip...
But now you've got me pondering the possibility of TTLG Chicago: Mark II: Even Meetier.

From New York I will then depart to Monter
rey, Mexico where I'd stay about a week.
Thought you were from around there? :)

Are you making a beeline from SF to Vegas, or will you pass through the general vicinity of L.A. on the way?

Stitch:
Stop in Madison is possible. In fact, I'll probably go straight from South Dakota towards the Lakes and avoid Des Moines, it adds up unnecessary miles to go through it.
BA:
I'm afraid Dallas would be too out of my way for this time. Too far South. Sorry. :(
TBE:
Count on it, if that project's a go Salt Lake City is definitely on my way. :)
Tonamel:
Thanks a lot for that tip. I wanted to see the Grand Canyon, but it still was quite out of my way from LV to SLC. I'd never heard of Bryce Canyon and it is practically on the way in comparison. And the pictures I've seen look absolutely gorgeous.
I could go to Indianapolis instead of heading East after Chicago. Then that would make me go Indianapolis > Columbus > Pittsburgh > Philadelphia > NYC. Anything or anyone I could see along that route, just tell me. :)
RBJ, thanks a lot for the excel, I'm starting to collect proper mileage to make a detailed roadplan, it will help :thumb:
Fafhrd:
Going through LA wasn't planned, but it could be a potential stop.
I'm thinking of skipping Boulder, Colorado and go directly from Utah to Wyoming.

Columbus
Urg, I'd really like to say "Skip this one, it's a fucking dump!", but then I know there's some people on these boards from there who might take offense, so I won't.
Oh shi

Frankly, you're not missing much by skipping Des Moines. Their entertainment strip consists of two bars and a lot where malls go to die.
If you need a place to crash in Madison you're more than welcome to stay at my place, or if you're in a hurry we can just grab some food and drinks downtown.
If you're looking for cool shit to do and see while passing through these parts I can certainly make some suggestions, too.

No need to divert to Indianapolis on my account, really. I'm not sure it has much to offer the discerning traveler, aside from the Motor Speedway, of course. And the only duckpin bowling lanes that aren't on the east coast.
My real suggestion would be to go from Chicago to Sandusky, OH. From there going to Cleveland, then on to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
It's an oft-forgotten fact that northeastern Ohio is prime roller-coaster country. If you can time getting to Sandusky over the weekend, Cedar Point is one of the best amusement parks anywhere.
Unfortunately Geauga Lake will be closed for the season by then, as it's got The Dominator, which is probably my favorite coaster.
Kennywood (near Pittsburgh) may still be open then, but it's been so long since I've been there, I can't even remember if it was any good.
And on the opposite end of the Xtreme-O-Meter is all the history to see in Philadelphia. Boston's good for that, too, but that's not exactly on the way.

I'd love to go with you on that tour. But my three week's leave will be over when yours starts. Now that my company has bought a long-haul airline, I'm looking forward to free tickets to America. Guess I'll make my own trip.

OK, thanks for the tips Tonamel :thumb:
So I'll start planning mileage this week-end based on the following route:
San Francisco - Monterey on Sept 21st, possibly by car
Monterey, Sept. 24th.
Las Vegas
Bryce Canyon
Salt Lake City
Devil's Tower
Sioux Falls, SD
Madison, WI
Chicago,IL
Sandusky, OH
Cleveland
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia
New York, October 7th.
With a possible stop in LA, but I'm really not sure at this point.
I probably won't be at Sandusky over a week-end as I plan to arrive on New York on a week-end, and since I'll be on a schedule, I can't change that.
For the same reason, I was hoping for a large meet in Chicago, but in the middle of the week it might not be possible... :erg:
Stitch, thanks for the offer. :) And suggest all you want, I posted the thread for that!
