and I will call it... 'this road trip'!
In order not to derail David's thread, I will post here my own plans for a vacation to the US later this year. It's significantly different as I basically plan to move pretty much all the time.
My starting point would be San Francisco too, but one month later, as I'll most likely go to the (
www.montereyjazzfestival.org) Monterey Jazz Festival, which takes place Sept. 20 to 23.
I would then rent a car and starting Sept 24th, just drive across the States. Basically, my preliminary itinerary as it is now would be:
from San Francisco to Las Vegas
Las Vegas to Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon to Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City to Boulder
Boulder to Rapid City,
Wyoming South Dakota (to see the (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devils_Tower_National_Monument) Devil's Tower)
Rapid City to Sioux Falls
Sioux Falls to Des Moines
Des Moines to Chicago
Chicago to Toledo
Toledo to New Jersey
New Jersey to New York
I would probably have 14 full days to do that but even if I don't plan any long stay anywhere maybe that's a bit optimistic. Maybe I could push to 16 days, but I'd work with a 14-day plan. Shorter route would be to skip LV and Arizona, and take the I-80 directly from SF to Reno and then Salt Lake City, but it's really somewhat less attractive.
From New York I will then depart to Monter
rey, Mexico where I'd stay about a week.
Now to the Gnome part :)
If along this route, there are any ttlger who can and want to meet and have a drink and take a few pics, feel free to post in here your location, I'll be happy to adapt as much as I can within the timeframe I have. Same with Mexico.
Any advice, help and orders to check myself in a mental institution will be welcome! :D
Cheers :thumb:

What, no Miami? NO HOT HOT LATINAS????? Oh right, California. :erm: Well I hope you enjoy fucking smog.

I plan the Seattle-Miami road trip for next year :p
Seriously though, being a space nut I'd love to go to Florida to see a Space Shuttle launch before they're decommissionned, so it's sort of planned a bit, for later.

Ah, my uncle is a programmer for NASA. Some 8 years ago (back when I was 14) he pretended I was his son on one of those take your son to work days things, and I got to see all sorts of cool stuff inside NASA. Had to go through an airlock pressure room where they suck out all the dust which scared the shit out of me, and then traversed a room of completely white walls/floor/ceiling with a lot of "DANGER, HAZARDOUS LASERS" signs everywhere. ;)

This sounds like a hell of a trip. Especially the 4200 miles in the car, much of which is going to be through the southwest. \o/

You better stop by Dallas.

I was actually planning on doing something similar this summer, and threw together a spreadsheet with mileage, driving times and some expenses on it.
I'm not sure it's feasible for me any time soon, but it's definitely something I want to do eventually.
If you're interested, (
http://bluegrin.com/misc/cross_country_trip.xls) this (right click, save as) could give you some ideas of how I planned my trip. Personally, I thought that the stretch between Chicago and SF was pretty much a barren wasteland that I wanted to get through as quickly as possible, and I was loking forward more to the west coast and southern part of the return.

Raph, you better stop in Salt Lake City to say hi to me.
I'll take you out to dinner for the best Chinese food in Utah. David's Kitchen. Then, you can be on your way, all happy and full of good food.
