The TTLG Jukebox. - by Omega

This thing needs maintainance. There seems to be a problem with the banners.
Plus all the files seem to be down. But I see this is a problem with the host and not the site. Jason's server seems to be down entirely. :erg:

Regrettably, Jason had to withdraw his services. The archive is currently being relocated and re-linked to a new server, I believe. As I understand it right now, Manny the Thief has kindly taken up the torch.
Stay tuned.

Just an idea... I don't have the bandwidth to do it, neither do I have a 24-7 internet connection, so I can't do it... :/
What about setting up a peer-to-peer filesharing server for FMs, screenshots and other TTLG related stuff (ie. the original Jukebox, other non-gaming related music by the TTLG residents, etc etc)? This would take the bandwidth load off of TTLG and divide it up among the people here.
[edit] Of course the server would still generate traffic, but it would probably still be quite a bit less than the traffic generated by hosting the actual files. Another downside I see would be that it'd be user-unfriendly towards people who don't have the corresponding clients... [/edit]
To avoid legal problems, it would be necessary to prevent people from offering illegal material, though, and I have no idea how that could be done. Or, for a less work-intense project, maybe just put a page online that has edonkey links to the FMs, music, whatever? A problem here would be that the files might vanish in the hilarious amounts of files on the edonkey network.
As I said, just an idea...

Originally posted by Omega Bittorrent? Haven't tried BT out. From looking at their FAQs, I have honestly no idea how it works. How complex is it to download or share files on the network? Would there be a possibility to open a "Server" (ie. File Tracker) for TTLG, or would people just dump their files on the "normal" network?
The former would, in my opinion, be a more "reliable" way to share the corresponding files; people would just connect to the TTLG server and look for the file they want. If it's not there, they can still try other file sharing networks or servers, but the TTLG server and the users connected to it would be, so to speak, a "replacement" for the "normal" hosting of the files.
In the case of TTLG using a separate "server", a protocol that can handle multi-sourced downloading should be used so that people with fast connections don't have to drag a 300meg FM from only one person with (probably) much less upload bandwidth than the downloader has download bandwidth. Multisourcing would help with that, as people could download from several other users at once, getting better download rates.
A "centralized" sharing network (ie. one server that handles file indexing, search requests etc.) would probably also be easier to track concerning illegal material, hence give better means to prevent legal trouble for the server admins.
What I'm going for is... err, let me explain it with a possible implementation.
We create an eDonkey server for TTLG and, instead of "normal" download links for the files on the various TTLG sites, insert ed2k links into the pages. Thus, people who want to download things would just connect to the TTLG eDonkey server (would it be possible to include the server's IP or hostmask in the ed2k link, thereby eliminating even -that- step?) and dump the ed2k link into emule, lmule, whatever they're using. If somebody shares illegal files, the people running the server could warn the user to take the illegal shares offline, and if he doesn't comply kick or ban him from the server to avoid trouble with the RIAA, MPAA or whoever else might be interested in suing people for copyright infringement.
Bye,
outie

Many thx to whomever got it up & running again.

Hmmmm... I delved into BT's documentation a bit, and I think it would do very well. The only thing that would be necessary for the TTLG guys would be to create .torrent files and host them instead of the actual FMs.
The problem is that, to start out, we'd need people who have at least a significant part of the FMs. Also, I think it's a bit impractical because Windows users sharing the files would need to keep one window open for every FM they have, which is, errr, not exactly optimal. Concerning that, I think that edonkey might be better. Plus, with ed2k links, all someone who wants an FM would have to do was click the download link on the FM list, minimize his eDonkey client and wait (and, if possible, share a directory containing his FMs). From what I see, it's not (quite) that easy with .torrent files.
For starters, I am currently ed2k-sharing the only FM left on my HD after the Partition Magic incident - the Lord Ashton series. Anyone who still has the original archive (or any other FMs, for that matter) on their HD is welcome to join in (especially because I'm on a meager ISDN connection and only online 4pm to 6am CET). Provide ed2k links for FMs that aren't here yet if possible. =)
