Alright, so I brought up this idea of a TTLG Garden Gnome (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=57463) here. The whole point to this idea would be to send this TTLG avatar around the globe, taking pictures with willing TTLG members as it goes. The couple of responses I got were quite positive and enthusiastic.
The most feasible way I could imagine doing this is as follows: instead of packing the avatar in a suitcase and handing it off to a TTLG member in another country/location, we would send it to the next person via mail. Here arises the need to have something light for us to be able to send with minimum shipping expense.
I wouldn't mind initiating such a project, but I would like to know if it would be feasible to have a link on the TTLG website to the "Gnome Project". Even better, to more or less directly integrate it with the TTLG network, much like the photo album, for example (this I know being more unlikely since it would factor as additional bandwidth consumption). Furthermore, I'm far from being a good HTML coder at the moment, but I could come up with a basic site witnessing the 'gnome's progress (on another site like tripod for example). I could set up a dedicated mailbox with my ISP for this project without a problem.
How would this work:
-People interested in 'receiving' the gnome could "Private Message" the person in possession of the avatar. This person would then send it to the interested party and post, maybe on the website, who the new 'receiver' is. I would imagine that this would function on a first come, first serve basis.
-The 'sender' would have to disburse the shipping fee to send the avatar. In keeping this object to minimal weight, it shouldn't be too expensive to ship out.
-I would then receive the pictures of the 'gnome' with the TTLG member either by email or by traditional snail mail. Formatting the pictures and uploading them would then be possible.
The reason I'm posting this idea here is because I believe it would be ideal to get the cooperation of the 'decision makers' at TTLG. Putting a link to the "Gnome Project" in the same style as the 'Photo Album' would be a fantastic and easy way to get to the site (be it hosted on TTLG or not). Even, if possible, creating a separate space for it on the Photo Album!
Regardless, I just wanted to sound out this idea to see what's 'do-able' and what isn't. Thanks for hearing me out!

Heheh... That's pretty damned cool.
Hm.
An inflatable avatar would be the easiest thing to use as far as keeping transfer between people easy and cheap, but then there's the difficulty of tears and punctures.
An inflatable garden gnome seems unlikely though.
And I'm sitting here rolling the name "The TTL Genome Project" in my mouth, and it MAKES ME LAUGH!
:D

"The TTL Genome Project"... LOL!!! I like it!
An inflatable avatar... good idea. I'll have a look tomorrow around town to see if I can find something suitable (plus, it'll give me a good excuse to go into Toys 'R' Us!) If I can't find that, I'm sure I'll be able to find something else that would work.

Ok, so I found an inflatable gnome today; actually, he's less a gnome, and more of an imp (we should still keep the TTL-Genome Project title though, since it makes me giggle). Here's a picutre of it:

Hopefully, this little piece of plastic will be traveling around the world soon!!

!
This sounds extremely super hyper-awesomely cool. We must do this.
It would also eliminate my need to buy a scanner, provided I got the gnome soon. 'Cause I could just send them to dhaelis, etcetera.
I cast my vote as a very minor, extremely subordinate member of the TTLG Staff in favor of the TTL Genome Project. Although that means absolutely nothing.

I'm in. Ship it here and I'll show it some snow. <SMALL>Not that we have any snow just yet, give me a couple of months...</SMALL>
