Whats the big deal about games being made about these subjects anyway?
DanielC on 24/3/2007 at 17:58
I know I should read the thread, but there's a lot of technical talk that I just don't understand..
Am I right in assuming that someone is making the entire System Shock game for the Half Life 1 engine? If that's the case then I'm really excited, and I hope that the creator follows through with the project. I started a few maps myself for Half Life but got bored after a while (because I'm so fussy, everything in my levels had to look and feel right, I spent way too much time obsessing over tiny little details, like the height of light switches  ).
I for one wish all the luck in the world to the person attempting this conversion. And I look forward to seeing an end product some day.

Question: Why the hell do you not like steam?
As the poster before you said, he spent 4 hours dealing with it on one PC; and even with a better PC it took 20 minutes.
I currently only have a dial-up connection. I bought the Half Life Generations pack many years ago (before that too became Steam only). I spent a whole afternoon trying to play a game of Counterstrike online, just as a one-off to see what it was like. (Before anyone says I was daft to try it without broadband, I had played other games like Quake deathmatch online with lots of people, so I knew it was possible). However Steam insisted on updating itself and installing loads of crud - and after about four hours I gave up completely.
Even then, I could understand the need to have a web-enabled program to play online. But not to play a game on my PC that I am never going to play online.
Steam is something we won't agree on - if most people are happy to use it to activate games, then fine, whatever works for you. It obviously doesn't work for me and other people. Hence concern about HL2 being used to mod SS games. But at the end of the day, it's only games, let's move on.

Fair enough.
However in my book you still lose for not having the balls to attempt to even back up your argument. I don't care if you illegally download or not, and I don't care if you feel it a waste of time to get into an actual discussion about it, but I'm pretty sure it would be less of a waste of time than your post was.
People who have real, actual reasons are the only people who should really be in discussions like this. Most of the people who are against Steam are the people who haven't bothered to try it. And hate it because a) it runs in the background or b) you have to activate your games (Which is really no different than entering a CDKey so what the fuck).
Go ahead and avoid Steam and it's games all you want. As far as I'm concerned, you're missing out on some quality games, and instead are spending time talking out of your ass.
Have a nice day. :cheeky:
The point of my post was to chime in and say, hey, I'm another person who won't use Steam for the time being, and haven't seen any good reason to change that stance.
That's because, newbie, discussion on Steam and pros and cons of using an engine "tied" to it is relevant discussion to this thread. The reasons that you or I will or won't use Steam is a seperate debate, and should be in a seperate thread.
My post saying I don't use steam is no more or less a "waste of time" than your hostile posts saying that not only do you use it but that anyone that doesn't is a retard. Get it? I doubt it.
You said, "I don't care if you feel it a waste of time to get into an actual discussion about it...". Well, sweetcheeks, the way you have with words is not "discussion", and I don't see why, even in another thread debating why some of us won't use Steam, I should waste my time telling you anything - you just keep continuing to namecall and insult. That isn't discussion. Neither is your flamebait, "in my book you still lose for not having the balls to attempt to even back up your argument". Do you realize, Cinderella, that I have debated Steam and my use of it or not, in depth in other threads? No? I'm not surprised. But you calling out my balls or lack thereof certainly doesn't endear me to rehashing those old points with you of all people. Do you really think I care for one second if I "lose in your book"? Think carefully - and you might get the correct answer.
Point is that there are plenty of folks that don't and/or won't use Steam - and that point is relevant to the thread and might hopefully have some influence on a choice of "engine". The whys an wherefores have been rehashed over and over again and it boils down to you use it and others don't. Accept it and quit being the 14-year-old l33t dood with your degrading writings.
Cheers,
Martek

I think he should use Source, and if you dislike Steam then too bad for you.
Though the Doom 3 engine would render a sci-fi horror better than any other engine (JupiterEx is very good at that too).
Matthew on 25/3/2007 at 00:01
Martek, you realise that with the 'Cinderella' and 'newbie' crap you make yourself as bad as him, right?
I mean, God you two, take it to PMs or shut up. The argument's been done to death.

the Doom 3 engine
That would've been my pick. :-)
Bjossi on 25/3/2007 at 00:31
In a few years it'll be released for free under the GPL. All the content such as textures, models, levels, etc. could be created and then put together once we get our hands on the GPL version of the Doom 3 engine.

Wow, sorry ive been gone as long as I have. I have actually been working on a lot of other things, including recovering from many crashes lately. Stupid windows >_< With that said, im experimenting with some of the uber-high res textures I found to see how they will fair with Half Life 2 engine. I know that the game im building this on is spendy, sorry, I like the engine, im not a coder, and I don't have a lot of help on the project, so im trying to find the easiest way so I don't get fed up and stop working on the game.
Anyways an update! I had someone helping on the mapping, don't know where he went thou, so I might have to get back to doors and crates and stuff. I built a bit more of the map. weirdest thing ever: HL1 is running slower than HL2. I don't know if its just a limitation in the HL1 engine, but i cant really worry about it. Im going to try and finish up the next segment and release it here tonight. Expect another small update.

I was wondering if you were still around or not. heh, no sweat. have you checked out my texture pack? I posted it somewhere in the page 6, but afterwards I separated into a new topic. Should be pretty obvious which one.
DL it and check if they are any good in HL2. There's also the fallback solution with no normal or specular maps.
