Commander Keen wouldn't run on that system.
ROFL! I was still thinking in 1990's terms :)

In terms of Steam, it's possible to play the games without it, and many mods aren't even released through it, so I don't see what the big deal is. Given that Steam and programs like it are going to become more popular over the next few years, I think it's a safe bet to say that anyone who is biased against Steam for any reason, is a complete fucking retard.
I avoided the Steam version of HL2 because I don't agree with having to 'activate' software I have paid for (regardless of whether I have an Internet connection at home or not). Maybe it will become more popular as a means of controlling what people do, but I don't want to support that movement. Whereas the company that made Galactic Civilisations 2 IS a company I would want to support (they didn't even add copy protection - no copy protection or activation problems with their game, EVER). I'm sorry if my lack of desire to leap into bed with Steam or linear (if fun) shooters like HL2 marks me out as mentally deficient.

Activating the games you buy is a free process.

I find it funny that people have a problem with it when it's on account of a game, but it's okay that an OS does it, or a copy of photoshop.
Given how high the rate of piracy is, especially around the demographics of people who play FPS games, I'm surprised that you don't offer more support for companies who are trying to cut back on it, rather than just giving up and saying "Here, pirate the hell out of it."
As for copy protection or activation problems, I've had neither with Steam. Once you purchase the game, you can throw Steam on any computer and log in as your account and install without a problem. As I mentioned, the only time I had a problem with activation at all was the day Half-Life 2 came out, and big surprise, it's because everyone was trying to use it.

Actually what makes you mentally deficient is your flawed argument. Speaking of Half-Life 2 as being linear as a bad thing inside a System Shock forum is just icing on the cake.
System Shock had a sense of freeroam but you still had a set of objectives and a line to follow. The only games that I never felt it was out of place or overbearing in were the System Shock series, the Half-Life series, and the Max Payne series, so I really have no idea what the hell you're going on about.

Also, re Steam: if it means I never have to use a frigging code wheel or type in the first word on line 45 of page 345432534 of the manual ever again, I'm all for it.
I even dislike Uplink for that, though I know (hope?) it was trying to be retro.

You'll only have to type CD key of Steam games once for your account, they will be there for all eternity, or for as long as the Steam servers exist.

If you're responding to me, I know. If you download them, you don't even have to do that.

I was responding to you, sort of. ;)
My dad allows me to use his account, since he was the one who bought and installed our copy of HalfLife 2 first on his computer. It's a comfy system.

I can run half life 2 at 20fps on a 8mb videocard with 1000mhz and 256 mb of ram. Sure it looks like shit, but its definatly doable. I ran it with my 1gb ram/1800mhz processor and ti4200 at like 50fps on medium-high.
You should leave half life to do what it does best, Natural selection/opforce/hldm.
If my photobucket was not down I would host the image.

The only issue that I have with STEAM is the dodginess of Offline mode. It makes running medium/large LAN events with no internet connection a nightmare at times. Then again, that's my own fault for letting people play CSS :)
