Will it run smoothy on my 2.8
MHz Pentium-4, 256MB RAM and GeForce 5200 grapics card?
Commander Keen wouldn't run on that system.

I ran HalfLife 2 maxed out with my old 2.8 GHz P4 and a Geforce FX 5700 LE (of course I didn't use AA), so indeed you don't need a powerful computer to run it nicely.
Huge amounts of people own the game, and not to mention how gorgeous the graphics are.
I therefore favor the Source engine.

Assuming you mean 2.8Ghz, your computer is better than mine and mine runs it fairly well. You'll definitely need more ram than 256, but even adding a gig shouldn't set you back too badly.

no, you don't need a powerful computer to run HL2. you do, however, need a decent one to run it the way it should be run. and unless i miss my guess, a lot of people here on TTLG lack such a computer.
just use spirit of half-life. it'll give you most of the features of HL2 with much less hit to your system.

1. Most people who own HL1 own HL2. Those who don't probably aren't the people we want playing this anyway.
explain this theory. a lot of people who don't own HL2 don't because their system can't handle it (or at least they don't think it can.) and a lot more people are skittish about steam and whatever else.

4. Source has a shitton of awesome mods out and coming out.
it has a shitton of mods coming out. i wouldn't necessarily call them "awesome".

6. The engine is way, way superior.
it's also about ten times harder to code for.
there is one other thing, and i've said this before in regards to the (now-cancelled) nightwatch mod that started with HL1, moved to HL2, then promptly flopped over and died: with HL1 you have the opportunity to make the mod look very unique (on a purely aesthetic, graphical level), but with HL2 i've yet to see a mod that didn't look very similar to every OTHER mod.

I think a big part of that group are overrating HL2's requirements then.
As for Steam, if you have a network connection, then I don't see how Steam is a bad thing. It is a lot more stable nowdays than back in it's beta stages.

i'm not disagreeing with you on that. i'm just saying that a lot of people are put off by it anyway.

There really aren't, to my knowledge, a whole lot of people who HAVEN'T played HL2. And given that it (and the source engine) will be around for a while, and the project would take
more than three days to do, I think it's a safe bet that there are
a) a lot people who have it
b) even more people who will have it
c) few people who don't have it
In terms of Steam, it's possible to play the games without it, and many mods aren't even released through it, so I don't see what the big deal is. Given that Steam and programs like it are going to become more popular over the next few years, I think it's a safe bet to say that anyone who is biased against Steam for any reason, is a complete fucking retard.
Steam was only ever a problem during the first few days of HL2's release, when it was so packed that the servers kept crashing. I've run it on the shittiest of internet connections without problems.

Depends on your take really. Lots of people rave about Garry's Mod but I don't find it that special. Likewise, I hate Counterstrike and Dystopia.

Can't really argue with that.

Today's games/mods do have difficulties looking unique in terms of graphics, I have to agree with that. But I think there is a slim chance that this SS1 remake will be one of the few to manage to look unique.

heh, i love dystopia, and don't really count CS:S as a mod anymore.
the hidden is a good mod, though.
beyond that, there are very few really good HL2 mods. ps: iron grip is not one of them.
