I suppose this isn't technically a summer movie (the summers season has finished now, right?) but I reckon it might have appeal to some here:

It's Bong Joon-ho's newest film and English language debut. I reckon he's one of the best directors around at the moment (
Memories of a Murder and
The Host are both very good and
Mother is a masterpiece) so I'm excited for this even if the trailer isn't the best. It does look a little bit too generic "dystopian future with sharp class divide", but it's apparently based on some French graphic novel and the few reviews that are out are very favourable, noting that Bong hasn't lost any of his distinct directorial flair in the jump to English language.
It's also got the South Korean actor, and Bong regular, Song Kang-ho (
The Host,
Thirst,
The Good, the Bad and the Weird) in it too, which is awesome.
Unfortunately, it looks like (
http://if.com.au/2013/08/06/article/Harvey-Scissorhands-strikes-again/YKFMPLTBXX.html) Harvey Weinstein wants to butcher it because he thinks it's too smart for Middle America.

Fucking hell, Harvey. Looks like I might be waiting for the DVD then.

Parnassus was pretty damn good.
I accidentally clicked on the first page of this thread and was very surprised to see all the praise for Iron Man 3. It sucked a lot imo - worst film of the whole new marvel franchise. Ben Kingsley was great for the ten seconds he was in it, but Guy Pearce's villain is awful and has no clear motivation. The whole thing feels like the definition of a generic and cliched superhero movie with a half finished script.
To be fair, I didnt love the other two - the first had a very solid first two acts followed by a dull and unsatisfying third act, and the second was just over the top... but this was far worse, and the tone didnt even fit with the rest of the series.

There's only 3 films I've watched recently. The first one was Footloose, but that's about 29 years behind the curve so I'm going to ignore that and the hideous, peach coloured frocks that are seared into my mind for the time being.
Secondly, I saw Tom Cruise's Oblivion. Haha. Hahahaha. I did like the noise the drones made; that and the music (by M83) were the best things about the film. Although the concept of an army of Tom Cruises attacking the earth did make my mind boggle briefly.
Then, I saw The World's End. Made me laugh a few times but as a vehicle for comedy I can't help but think it's inferior to both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz in every way.

Lori Singer in footloose. How about that?

Man, friggin' Footloose. It's not a good film. It's an 80s film. You want to better understand the most garish decade ever, you need to see it.

The high point was definitely the Tractor Duel and realising I was lucky my parents didn't dress me in anything sky blue.

I liked Riddick a lot. Except the ending. C'mon, guys, stick the landing.
1. He gets with the lesbian? Why? And, furthermore... WHY? This isn't the 80's.
2. Really should've said something about why they went back for him. Wouldn't be hard. Even just "because you went back for me" would've been fine.

Elysium was predictably average, it had great art direction (not unique though, if you've seen
District 9) and solid action sequences (Blomkamp is clearly a gamer from the days of GIBS!), but everything else was derivative or stupid. There were plot holes as big and as bad as Jodie Foster's English-accented overacting in the role a quasi-military commander leading a coup of the futuristic safe haven. Not sure what the hell Damon was doing in this but it probably saved it from a complete B movie if it were in the hands of someone else.
Suffice to say I don't think Blomkamp should be allowed to write and direct again, plus if it again features his grimy, lived-in sci-fi aesthetic I think I will give any future films of his a miss.
Also, no more Sharlto Copley.
Edit: to catch up previous discussion -
Haha, yes, this article is bang on - but worse than this, and to highlight the sheer logical stupidity of this movie - the fucking military contractor locking in all of the billions of dollars on multi-year contract hasn't given Elysium space-side defence capabilities or more than 15 robo-police, based on the amount available during a half-hour seige on Elysium.
