Okay, I'm a bit afraid since this thread is quite old/already dead and I'm not sure if I get flamed now .. but I didn't want to open up a completly new thread for some ideas I've got after replaying the game ..
That ghost has the same character model as Goggles, that's for sure.
Now since the creators had a whole bunch of standard models, I'm sure they wouldn't have used the unique character model of the player if it was just to show some random guy commiting suicide.
People say, that he might be the OSA guy, Constance Sanger was speaking of, but that's not true. The guy who stalked her was Malone, as stated in a log by Martin - also, Sanger is refering to him in one of her log as "Malone".

They hit us six hours ago. Malone, the OSA spook, tried to take one of things out with pyrokinesis attack, but it didn't even break stride. Then it unloaded both barrels into his stomach. Falzone said there's a weapons cache in one of the engine nacelles. Maybe I can find him and the others there...

It's most likely he joined Constance down in Engineering and was killed.
What always bothered me, was the question, why Goggles was undertaking the surgery and then was put in cryo sleep in the first place.
Was he doing that voluntary or what?
We get a hint on that from Bayliss:

Doc - I don't feel right about any of this. I still don't understand why you asked me to mess with the memory restoration on that grunt. Why didn't you want him to remember volunteering for this gig? He did volunteer for the implants, right? Every email from you gets stranger and stranger... it's like you're not even the same person anymore.
It's obvious that Goggles didn't volunteer.
At least that's what this e-mail is meant to tell us.
Now what if he really attempt to commit suicide but wasn't killed?
He could have fallen into some kind of coma .. not beeing able to protest and "Polito" beeing able to do whatever surgery on him in the name of cure/treatment. We never get the details, but HINTS and I believe those logs + the ghost scene give us the hints needed to get the story behind it.
Why did Goggles try to kill himself? Well, it was around the 4th/5th of July when the surgery was executed. During that time Hydro already was sealed off, members of the crew had disappeared and the big crisis was about to start soon. I guess Goggles somehow got behind some of that. Or he was forced into committing suicide.
Ah, well, there's also the one mail from Polito/Shodan, that tells you, that the hauntings are projections of the recently dead (or something like this).
But I'm not sure why it just should be dead people's projections..
There are also many "projections" (please give me a better word) that don't show people who are dying, but who are just in stressy/very relaxed situations. I don't really see the point why this emitions should only be from the recent dead.
At least that's my thought. I've got the feeling I forgot some important facts .. but I'm sure you will tell me.
And please forgive me for resurrecting this old topic. I've tried to back my theory up as most as I could.

True, Goggles didn't volunteer for the implants. But I don't think he tried to commit suicide either, he's a soldier after all. So killing himself on the beginning of a crisis seems a bit out of the way. Especially since he doesn't seem to mind anything of this when we play him. After killing hundreds of hybrids and going through all the hell that's broken loose he's still got the nerve for a corny joke in the end ("Nah!"). Doesn't sound like a suicide candidate to me. And as far as we know, Goggles has no wife named Rachel let alone kids.
What really makes me wonder is: If Goggles didn't volunteer for implants, why was he in cryosleep in the first place?
The only option I could think of so far is that Goggles underwent some surgery for whatever reason (accident, normal implants) and was then taken advantage of.

Wait . . . didn't one of Shodan's e-mails say that she chose Goggles, then had a robotic servant render his form unconscious? Then she completed him with cybernetic grace? I think it's the one at the beginning of Pod 2? :weird::confused:

I've just finished re-playing the game again.
To me, Shodan, under the guise of the recently dead Polito. Got a protocol bot to knock goggles out and get him modded.
My only thoughts about that ghost is this.
"Never put all you annelid eggs in one basket"
He's just another poor dumb grunt that shodan altered. Perhaps one where shodan allowed him to keep his memory.
Stuck in space with monsters, a mental AI and a tonne of metal shoved into your head. It might explain why he got a little down

Pray: <i>"the creators had a whole bunch of standard models"</i> Wrong. I think that it was already explained that the Goggles model is the only one that exists <b>holding a gun</b>. Hence why you see him as the ghost comitting suicide.
TNT: I think that that e-mail refers to the way Goggles has been progressing and developing his cybernetic skills, and not to some past event.
cosmicnut: Where do you get the idea that he's been 'altered' by SHODAN? Why can't he be just a regular UNN grunt who, seeing how The Many was taking over everyone, refused to let himself be changed like that?
