I don't know, and I don't care.
*sigh*
We go through this all the time. Lord Bafford, Lord Donal, Sheriff Truart...
We've worked for all of them, and always gotten fired, because someone broke in, something got stolen, or someone got KILLED!
I'm always too distracted answering your stupid questions!
*sigh*
When this job is over, you're on your own. I'm done with you...
Taffer!
*cough*
:p

But the games are full of moments in which Garrett shows how unselfish and emotionally attached he is.
Which moments are you referring to?

Of course it does, but those themes remain in the shadows, behind a lovable but overall ludicrous frontispiece.
Yeah, the series' emergent structure allows for many alternative interpretations: take any of the levels from The Metal Age with an alarm state to see how they could alter the experience, or how the NPCs chatter could serve as humorous under.., err, overtones, encouraging us to re-enact the chasing scenes from The Benny Hill Show. Yet, when viewed as a whole, the authored content - may it be as brief as a minute long briefing cutscene - gives a very strong sense of direction, allowing the series' themes to shine.
I watched the 2012 Quakecon talk about Looking Glass just recently, where Harvey Smith brought up how the company's games had strong literary sensibilites (around the 16 minute timestamp). Which is probably one of the main reasons why The Dark Project and The Metal Age feel so timeless to me.

Yeah, way too much work to actually have to read the thing. It's like opening up a zip file, exhausting.
