Welcome to every thread about anything ever. And replying just makes people think their opinions matter (spoiler: they don't).
Anyway, RIP Thin White Duke.

Oh no! That's much too young. What a beautiful and bizarre man he was. Those eyes...
I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence and
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
RIP :(

Bowie was one of those artists who was a little like wallpaper. Sort of odd wallpaper in this case. But you say to yourself "I'm not really a Bowie fan as such. But I like a few of his tunes and his general style, or lack thereof". And some die hard Bowie freak starts rattling off names or playing tracks. Then you find yourself saying "Yeah that one's good. And that one. Yeah I like that one too. Oh yeah! That was one of his too!" and so on and so forth.
It was more distressing in this case because I hadn't even really noticed we hadn't got any new music for a while. I saw the headline and thought there's probably half a dozen records by now that I'll get around to listening to one day. He just keeps churning them out doesn't he. That's the way.
And then he dies.
When the album came out there was a quote from the video director Johan Renck
"I have no desire to do any more videos (now) knowing the process never ever gets as formidable and fulfilling as this was,"
"I've basically touched the sun."
At the time I thought, that seems a bit dramatic. The video is nice enough, but come on!
He wasn't really talking about the video. More the context we now all know.
I've got something over the die hard Bowie fan though, usually. Me and the other semi-goths thought Outside was pretty good.

Outside is my favorite album of his. I love the blissful dissonance of that record and I always get goosebumps when I'm Deranged kicks in.

I saw some shapes in the field outside early this morning and was happy for 5 minutes. And then I heard this news. So sad. I wish he hadn't got his teeth quite so 'fixed' though.

I'm inconsolable.
Today has been very surreal.
I cannot begin to tell you how much his music has meant to me. All I can say is that through some very tough times in my life, it sustained me.
Thanks David.
Keep your 'lectric eye on me, Babe.

I can't remember the last time I've been so devastated about the death of someone that I don't personally know. I really wasn't expecting this, even though there had been rumours about Bowie's ailing health around - he was just one of those mysterious people that I thought would live forever. I've liked his music since I was a little kid (it was only later until I really got into his music though) and for me he'll always be the the coolest musician that there has ever been. Quite possibly the best musician too... What a legend! I'm listening to Space Oddity right now and feeling like shit. And awesome.
And the stars look very different today...
This goddamn hurts. :(
It's heartbreaking, but I respect and love it how Bowie remained a true artist until the very end. He even turned his own death into art with Blackstar, goddammit. :erg: It's so over-the-top even for Bowie, but I love it, and I'll listen to the album in a whole new light from now on. And here I was thinking that nothing could ever surpass Freddie Mercury and The Show Must Go On as the perfect swansong...

Jeremy Vine (can you loathe a man you don't know?), on BBC Radio 2, was mathering on today about whether/how you can feel grief for someone you don't know. I can't stand his pi voice so I don't know what the conclusion, if any, was. To my mind, if someone touches your heart with their music, their art, their whatever, then you will grieve for the fact you will never feel quite the same way again. Bowie touched my heart. A few other people have also done that. It has a lot to do with time and place I think. A loss is a loss no matter what it is.
Edit. (

Sad news from a human perspective but to be honest
90% of his output was crap
I remain unapologetic. Just because he's dead doesn't mean I like his music. Nothing against David Bowie the man though. Never met him so I don't know what he was like.
Big fan of 1D are we?
