Lol, that video is awesome. I hope Thief is filled with frantic moments paired up with frantic music telling me I should be frantic.

Also, near the beginning of the gameplay demo, Garrett seems to quickly whip out and use the claw to lift himself up to the higher vantage point, shortly before doing the contextual guard takedown move. Can't watch the vid right now, but I think that's the spot.

Did anyone follow the development of DX:HR? The reason I ask is because I am curious if there are any patterns in fan reception. Comparatively speaking, were fans as upset about the direction of that game?
We were pretty damn upset. 3rd person cover system (nevermind takedowns, jump-downs, and, bizarrely, ladders). Unavoidable boss fights. No mutually-exclusive augmentations. They even let slip - by which I mean
bragged - that most levels are linear with a magic elevator at the end to get you out.
All true. DX:HR is fantastic not because it's not flawed, but because where it's good, it's very good. ...Which is a lot like DX1, honestly.
So, who knows? Everything we're finding out about NuThief is likely to be true, but that doesn't necessarily exclude there being a lot of good gameplay in between the unfailable QTE's and scripted sequences.

I didn't buy; or play; DE:HR for those very reasons (mainly unavoidable boss fights, on a prequel to a FPS game where you could kill 0 people.

Opinions were mixed during the lead up to DX:HR. Here at TTLG the prevailing attitude was mild pessimism, but it was not overwhelmingly negative like this forum. I was expecting DX:HR to be something between Bioshock and Invisible War and was unsure about buying it until the leaked demo. I ended up being very pleasantly surprised. I think most of us were, although there are some people who still think it was shit. And it's ironic that my biggest gripes with the way the game turned out were not the things we all were concerned about during development.

A lot of the reception I've seen for Thief has been lukewarm at best. Hell, I remember following TDS and all the concerns from fans were never like they are with Thi4f.
Thief fans are more pessimistic now
because of Deadly Shadows. To an extent, the same was true for DX fans after Invisible War. But TTLG has always been the most hardcore Thief fan site I've known, whereas most of the hardcore Deus Ex fans seemed to be over at Planet DX. And the hardcore Thief fans are more emotionally attached to the old games than the hardcore Deus Ex fans ever were.

Deus Ex forces you to kill Anna Navarre. DX was never designed for a non-lethal run and to accomplish it requires using an AI exploit that doesn't work on all game versions.

Killing nobody (directly) in DX1 requires exploiting AI behavior in ways that were clearly not intended by the designers. (Specifically, you have to force an AI to open the door past Anna Navarre in the escape.) It was hardly a game feature.
It would be a shame to never play DX:HR just because of a handful of brief sections.

If it was never intended my dear, why does Gunther have dialog specifically dealing with that later on*?

Seriously it was just probably a cut idea because they didn't want to figure out dialog for Gunther later on, that was characterized as half in love with Anna. Once they realized people did it anyway because of unscripted behaviour they probably thought 'what the hell' and added a justification, like they should have at first. Nothing like HR offsourced scripted to hell and back
obligatory boss fights.

Rope arrows at fixed attachment points, we may as well have f*cking ladders and not bother with the "shoot rope arrow" sequence...
Yep... NuRope = mounted ladder or hanging chain
What an embarrassment.

...ah sorry, I forgot shooting arrows is both "respecting the franchise" and "showing off the kewl bow animatic" as well

This is even less free roaming than the infamous "climbing gloves" from TDS
As in "absolutely no free roaming, at all"...NuRope makes the Climbing Gloves look like a champion of freedom.

Answer = he doesn't. No checkmate.
If you use the exploit to get by Anna, Gunther still believes you killed her when you meet him in the Templar cathedral.

F***, you're right, i had the idea that that "No, I cannot forgive. No... not the killing of Agent Navarre. I will follow you." was part of the catedral.

OK, and at least we agree the DXHR boss battles sucked.
