Also immediately when I saw the structure in the background it reminded me of Saturnine's Rose Cottage mission
Well... right now they are rebuilding this level so that it fits Xbox 360, so... in the end Rose Cottage might even look better than Northcrest Manor. ;)

That quote reminds me of what the developers of the upcoming game Ryse said about why their quicktime events complete themselves if players don't manage to hit the button in time. I don't remember the exact quote but the gist of it was that when players miss button prompts and fail a quicktime event they get frustrated and they don't want frustrated players. There's a huge difference between making a game easy to complete and making a game that plays itself. Most big budget titles seem to be headed down this road and it's sad. I think somewhere along the line of trying to make cinematic experiences they forgot that they weren't making animated movies.

That's a fair point :laff:

SR: Honestly, it’s like, let’s say you are at home, you like to write, and you have a novel in your drawer that you would like to share. I’m pretty sure you don’t write for one guy; you want to make sure a lot of people would see the story. It’s the same thing to us.
Yeah authors don't try to write novels that they think are great stories. They are just out to sell books.

Wait, what? They have managed to dumb down QTEs? Are they trying to target the comatose demographic now?

"The Focus is really linked with the story.... That's why we designed the game with it.”
But you can turn it off.
Even stranger, as hard as it is to believe, is that you *can* turn off focus, but you cant turn off the damn shroud?!

No, I don't have a problem at all. Do we have Garrett in the game? Yes. Do we get to steal things? Of course. Are we a master thief in a place called The City? Sure. Can we use special arrows and gadgets? Seems so. Sorry, but this is a Thief game for me.
That's a fairly slim list of requirements. I could give you a re-packaged copy of Skyrim, with a pre-made character named Garrett, and that should be perfect! You can even become the Master of the Thieves Guild!

Did anyone follow the development of DX:HR? The reason I ask is because I am curious if there are any patterns in fan reception. Comparatively speaking, were fans as upset about the direction of that game? A lot of the reception I've seen for Thief has been lukewarm at best. Hell, I remember following TDS and all the concerns from fans were never like they are with Thi4f.

I don't remember much of the build-up... except that a lot of people were still jaded by IW so expectations were low, I think (IIRC), and then the game was better than people were expecting so I think it ended up getting more of a boost if anything.
The thing is, though, that HR was a prequel with a completely different player character, so they had a legit clean slate in a fair way... Also its opening level was pretty kick ass IMO, and gave a beautifully realized world, and did a lot to get you into the game world (although the actual game levels didn't deliver as much as they could have given the good will it built up ... a lot like HL2 now that I think about it.)
But those are two things NThief might not have in its favor. I mean its "clean slate" is on thin ice since it's rebooting a known character, and I don't know how its early game will play out, but if it's the demo level then it doesn't bode well.
That Sneaky Bastard review was in line with our kind of thinking, although I don't know how much it may speak to mainstream gamers, but it speaks our language anyway... I think they know a thing or two about Thief DNA.

These were just a few examples. But tell me what does an RPG has to do with a stealth game? I think even you realize what you just said is BS.

Yeap. And I found the article with the quote of what a representative for the developer said when asked about why they complete themselves if the player doesn't bother to:
Quote:
I missed it. Damn.
But then somehow, for some reason, I still complete the cinematic ‘kill'.
What?
Maybe it's a bug I think, but no. Next time I deliberately press the wrong button. The kill goes ahead, no consequences. Then I try hitting no buttons whatsoever. The kill goes ahead. I put the controller on the table in front of me, the kill goes ahead.
What is going on here?
I ask one of the Crytek people hovering at the booth - is this a bug? Why am I completing kills when I hit the wrong button prompt? Or, worse, no button at all. Turns out it was a deliberate design choice.
“We don't want the player to feel frustrated,” I am told.
The whole weird event is here: (
