“It’s a question of production choice,” Roy explains. “If I give you the possibility to shoot the rope arrow everywhere, I will have to cut something. I will have to reduce our intention for the narrative. If it’s everywhere, the cost of it is to block your view, because it’s still a console. It’s still tech. By having a smart level design, by making sure that feels natural that here you can go – not scripted, but you check and if you feel that you should be able to do that and it’s there, the job is done. If it’s not frustrating, the job is done.”
This is possibly the craziest line of bullshit I've ever heard fall out of the mouth of a game developer. It's not only untrue, it's lazy and inexcusable.

Yes...The lies, double-speak, and inexcusable non-THIEF design, insults the THIEF community.

It is time to get used to this new
Thief game. Have to say I am still very excited about it, since it is still a new
Thief game after all.
There's your problem right there...
It isn't a THIEF game...It just doesn't qualify...:tsktsk:

The current gen thing makes perfect sense - they've said from the start that that they're not pushing any kind of graphics envelope anyway, and they'd just be losing out on a ton of potential sales by limiting to next gen.

No, I don't have a problem at all. Do we have Garrett in the game? Yes. Do we get to steal things? Of course. Are we a master thief in a place called The City? Sure. Can we use special arrows and gadgets? Seems so. Sorry, but this is a Thief game for me.

Yeah, my respect for Roy as someone who gets Thief took a big hit after reading that review.

How about the shroud? Or those hands?
I mean, I know rope arrows can cause headaches for level designers, but this is 2013...don't we have the raw computing power to handle long distance views yet?

Yeah...I've been thinking lately that it's time for me to stop trying to get used to this new "Thief" game. In my heart, I knew the developers were irredeemably clueless when they revealed that they had dumped Stephen Russell. I've been hoping against hope for too long already, and it's only been a few months since then. It's time for me to give up on it.

Regardless of thoughts on how the gameplay portion of Thief is shaping up one thing is certain:

I really like the look of the city with the city watch banners hanging everywhere and the instant feeling of political oppression you get from it. You can almost tell what's going on in the story just by looking at the city itself. Also immediately when I saw the structure in the background it reminded me of Saturnine's Rose Cottage mission so I thought that was neat even though it's not a reference to it:

It's too bad this isn't "The City".
