How can anything be more depressing than a public suicide note? I'm speaking of Ian Curtis, and among the dark gems of Joy Division's catalog, nothing is more despairing than "24 Hours"
Ironically, you could argue it got worse after he died as his headstone was subsequently nicked from my local cemetery.

I feel like I probably have 100 better songs but I've never really sat down and marked them so I've forgotten what they are.
First half-assed idea is (

Well, while I'm on alice in chains, I guess (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPFGsGlHeos) love hate love is ok too for a depressing song. I guess actually a lost of AIC is like that when I think of it.

You get so many points for Khanate, Jusal, though I don't really consider them (or that song) depressing so much as so intense they drain you.

I haven't heard anything in this thread that gives me shivers or makes me feel sad in any way, except the Leonard Cohen choice.
For me, the saddest series of songs I have ever listened to is this medley, especially the last part of it. I have broken-down watching this thing. It's something about the effect of turning happy songs into really bittersweat songs.
As the title says, it's the memorial after Jim Henson's death:

If you want the most depressing movie, I would recommend "Grave of the Fireflies". The effect is the same.

Something I Can Never Have, by Nine Inch Nails. Incredibly depressing, yet somehow beautiful. Don't listen to this song if you've just broken up with somebody. Cool alternate studio version (
