I've heard a lot worse (Dracula and Richter from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night anyone?).
... shudder.

And don't tell me a chill didn't go down your spine the first time you heard a Liche utter his low maniacle laugh or curse you in a language you couldn't understand.
Well, the liche gibberish hardly counts as voice acting, now does it? Anyway, anything by Stephen Russell was top notch, though. But I already stated that. It's been a while, but I recall the King of Arx wasn't too bad, either.
Also, I admit that I didn't compare the quality of voice acting to the video game standards... but quite frankly, why should I? The fact is that vast majority of video game voice acting just sucks horribly, but patronising it is hardly the solution. The worst acting of the century was certainly exaggerating, but that's just because it was such a jarring stab in an otherwise good game. Carlo was truly awful, there's unfortunately no way around it.
It's perfectly possible to have good voice acting in video games. Compare Arx to almost any adventure game or Thief (the first one) and be amazed.

I think I can agree with you on this one, I just posted about the voice acting because I felt your original post was a little too harsh on the voice acting in a game where there were really only two or three badly voiced characters.

On this point, I beg to differ. I've heard countless maniacle laughs and supposed alien languages butchered in numerous games, TV shows, and movies. True, producing a convincing evil laugh or speaking a believable made-up language aren't the same as putting realistic emotion and nuance into a real language, but doing those things still takes a significant amount of talent. If someone handed you a sheet of paper that said "Jhiib Kaarka Ghrell Xicx" and said "Ok, read that in a dark, sinister voice designed to incur fear", chances are it would be difficult for you (I know it would be for me). As a whole, I just don't think the voice acting in Arx is bad enough to warrant such a scathing post.

Maybe I missed it somewhere along the line, but just in case it hasn't already come up...
With all the hubbub about Dark Messiah (for which I'm keeping an open mind, for the record), what is the true scoop on Arx 2? Is it a dead issue, is it still in early development, what's going on?
Because when Digi sez...

I feel comfortable letting you guys know, though, that you have little to worry about.
it kinda makes me think I will, at some point in the not-too-distant future, actually be playing Arx 2.

Hey, it's been forever since anyone has posted on here. Is Arx 2 still in development? Please somebody assure me it hasn't been cancelled :erm:

They've postponed it for the moment. Hopefully they will make a sequel for it some time in the future, but for now it makes sense for them to go in the direction that they're headed in.
Malygris on 13/5/2006 at 12:18
What direction is that?

That other game that's being discussed in here right now... it's for a good reason. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is Arkane's current project.

AFAIK, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is basically an action/adventure, maybe even just a shooter with elements of adventure. At least it will have much less freedom and RPG elements than Arx Fatlis. Am I right?
Digital Nightfall on 15/5/2006 at 22:02
I think the best thing I can say about Arx 2 right now is that... if Dark Messiah sells well, we can look forward to an Arx 2.
If not... maybe not.
So give Dark Messiah a chance. It looks like it's going to be a bloody amazing game.
And I mean bloody literally.
