Unless something major has changed recently, you can't compare Calc to even ancient versions of Excel, it's not even in the same league.

Heywood, I had the exact opposite experience with Linux (SUSE and Red Hat) with very large databases. How about a cluster of 440 partitions (55 servers) of DB2 running on Linux? While AIX does have some optimizations for the PSeries, DB2 LUW running on Dell or HP hardware and Linux is just fine. Security issues were nearly non-existent, due to the security features of DB2. Windows would have been a nightmare scenario for this environment.
As for desktops? Well, Linux is OK. I feel it is not for the casual user with no IT experience. It has come a very long way, but it is still too hands on for most people.
