To be fair though, automobiles have been doing this for years, and not only that (at least according to the plethora of Top Gear I've been watching) a majority of older automobiles can outperform newer ones.
I dunno what cars that would be. A modern 4 cylinder in an entry level car has more torque/power than a typical v6 sedan from just 20 years ago, thanks to advances in fuel management tech. Not to mention other components being a lot better, like lighter/stiffer body fabrication.

Admittedly, I'm no car expect. I drive an Oldsmobile 88 from 1993, and she ain't no beaut, but if I were to judge her performance and reliability to my old Ford Escort '98 (a complete failure of a car) or Dodge Durango '00, I would say she's the better automobile. She gets comparative if not better better gas mileage, has arguably better torque, and has had less breakdowns than either of my two cars.
Taking the analogy further, let's talk the Toyota Prius, the latest advancement in technology. I have more power (170 hp > 98 hp) than a Toyota Prius, and while I might be taking a hit to my gas mileage, at least I can find parts for my car at Autozone.
I'm not trying to start a tech/car war here. I'm only trying to say that, even with advancements in technology, there aren't always going to be better products than what we already have made. It's all very subjective. And honestly, like ZB said, we're talking about improvements that nobody rightly cares about anyhow.
I'd much rather have a physical keypad on my phone.

Why on earth would you be comparing the power capability of a car with a 3.6 litre V6 to a car that's specifically designed for fuel economy at the
expense of power?

Because design tradeoffs are exactly what we've been discussing for the last page.

So comparing a hybrid to a standard petrol car and then almost completely tossing aside the entire reason people buy a hybrid to focus on power output is the best way to do that?

Stop being dumb.

Oh dear, that was a poor one.

Sorry, I don't get around to CommChat often enough to answer to replies swiftly.
The Prius is (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133468&p=2020939&viewfull=1#post2020939) "a modern 4 cylinder car benefiting from advances in fuel management technology" which lacks the power that my V6 from almost twenty years ago has, and as such is the focus of my argument.
Even as technology advances, there will still be reasons to continue using older technology. It's all about the trade offs as the new advances arrive. I like my V6, not because of how much petrol it consumes, but because I can get up a hill pretty fast and if it breaks down I know I won't be spending much on repairs. Not to mention the likelyhood of it breaking down is fairly low due to the principles of Mean Time to Failure anyhow.
In my opinion, technology's goal is to improve the quality of life for those that accept the advancements. If people want to buy Priuses, that's their choice, and good on them for saving the environment or whatnot. However, to me, it wouldn't improve the quality of my life. Again, it should go without saying, but this is all very subjective and not all of those accepted advancements actually end up improving the lives of those that accept them.

:D How about everyone else's quality of life, including your children?
