I didn't think a cable show would be the thing for him
Don't sell 'cable' short. fX has been coming up with some of the best shows on TV in recent memory. The Shield is a classic and without a doubt one of the best acted and written shows on TV. Rescue Me is fantastic, and though not my bag, by all accounts, Dirt and Nip/Tuck are pretty good too. Outside of HBO, fX is probably the best network for developing TV series right now.
Which is why I think it's the
perfect medium for him. None of the silly pressures of a movie, or a network show, but he's talented enough* to carry a show with some depth.
*though, I do think the guy is a tad overrated

I can't get into Dirt for some reason, but The Shield is excellent. I think Izzard is a bit overrated too, but only because his stand-up is extremely original and smart. The great thing about the show last night was that it curbed some of his eccentricity and made him a bit more understated than I feared it would. I was afraid it would be like when Jack Black tries to take on a Serious Acting Role, but with Eddie, you could tell that he's going to really do a great job with this character, especially since he's having to hold back a bit here at the beginning.
The problem with movies for him is that he typically gets minor roles, and thus, not enough screen time for an audience to really 'get' his humor. It always comes off very bland and unmemorable.
