It bugged me in T1 that Garrett had to steal an ancient trophy (the horn of Quintus) just to pay his ghetto apartment rent. This horn was worth how much exactly - hundreds of thousands? And now I've been playing FMs and noticing that some of the authors use this ridiculous objective as well - the rent is due so go and steal a few thousand coins  You bet I want to be a landlord in the Thief universe, to receive thousands for shitty one room apartments with no water and electricity.

I guess he blows the rest on wine, women and fast carts.

I've always gotten the feeling that it's not just ONE place he's paying rent on, but all his safe-houses - and whatever other operating expenses (bribes, etc) he incurs.

Not to mention the cost of equipment. Hell, one broadhead costs 25, so even if his rent is only a few hundred a month, his OpEx are huge.

Fence fee of course. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find an not backstabbing fence?
Also it's a highly rare item everyone knowing a bit about the old city knows the horn.... so if they see it they will asume someone stole it and quite possible rat him out to the hammers who don't take kindly to graverobbing. Also other expenses like bribes, money spend while observing, money spend to get hold of old maps/ information etc... I guess poor Garret is lucky that he can make a living of thieving...

He had money left over and bought his first lockpicks, remember? He took on the job, not just for rent, but to also make up for not getting paid for the Bafford job AND having his fence die on him after trying to break him out of prison, remember? Pretty costly stuff, and he still had money left over. And what Sola' says is true: He's got safehouses in several districts.

I think one thing might even be more probable: He doesn't steal something big every day, so it must last for a couple of weeks. However, I definitely don't like overly unrealistic/unlogical objectives either. Be it the Clocktower affair in TDS or some of the "epic" FMs.

Garrett doesn't seem to be the slow, lazy and hungry type.
Mission number twelveteen: Casing the Joint. Joint. heh.
