The one I don't understand is the assault shotgun. There's plenty of ammo, but just like the sawed-off shotgun you need to be practically on top of your enemy to use it effectively.
While this is true in the first 1/2 of the game, I have noticed that once you max out the rifle skill, and add a few recoil mods to the assault shotgun, you can get get headshots at quite a distance with it, especially while crouching.
An interesting thing about crouching is that it causes your bullet clusters to become MUCH tighter, after about 20 minutes experimenting one day and checking bullet holes in the wall at various distances I worked it out to be around a 50% reduction in bullet spread at all distances. Pretty good, and seems to apply to all weapons.
But yeah, just try it in one of your later game saves. Get a nice maxed out assault shottie with some recoil mods done to it, crouch and shoot at a medium distance wall... if more than about 2-3 of the 5 slugs happen to land in a roughly head-sized radius of where your cross hair was pointed, thats a one shot kill for many enemies. Not guaranteed of course but it is an assault shotgun after all... a further 1-2 shots will definitely finish the job off.

For such a short-barreled weapon, thats a nice spread. If it were around today, it would definitely be on the "illegal weapons" list.

The only time I
don't like it is when it has the Silencer mod installed. Then it sucks - I want to
HEAR the satisfying churning of bullets!
I know this post is very old, but what exactly is so satisfying about the AR's firing sound? In my opinion it sounds weak & washed-out.

Yeah its pretty flimsy isn't it... I mean a 7.62 is not small bullet, thing sounds like an automatic .177!
Interestingly though, there are only four shots sounded despite a burst consisting of 5 bullets. Shifter fixes this, but I suspect the reason everyone complains about the silenced version is due to a bug preventing the other four sounding, so you actually just hear a single silenced shot followed by complete silence while the other 4 bullets exit the rifle. Again, shifter also fixes this and IMO the silenced AR actually sounds quite nice now!

Assault rifle with master rifles and recoil mods is basically a laser that you focus on people's heads no matter how far away they are for a second and a half to kill them, also scope.

I had noticed those bugs as well, made things sound pretty weird. So I might look around for Shifter's fixes.

Well I never said it was the meatiest-sounding gun that ever existed, but I'd rather have what's there than put the Silencer Mod on it and put up with
that crap!
IMPO, regardless of what an assault rifle/machine gun-style weapon sounds like normally, sticking a sliencer on it is just stupid and doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

Silencers are used on such weapons, though the pistol is a better candidate for one, while a manual loading pistol or bolt action rifle would even be better because there's no automatic ejection noise. Most silencers aren't very silent but they can alter the sound of the shot so it's harder to recognize and locate, plus being better for your own hearing... but then again this is just a video game. :cheeky:

Assault Rifle equipped w/phosphor rounds is awesome to behold.
