I can see why somebody might give up on the AR because it's practically worthless when you first get it. But if you invest early on in AR mods and rifle skill, it can be a great weapon through the latter 3/4 of the game. And 7.62 ammo is always plentiful all the whole way through the game, not just in the last 1/2 or 1/3.
The one I don't understand is the assault shotgun. There's plenty of ammo, but just like the sawed-off shotgun you need to be practically on top of your enemy to use it effectively.

The assault shotgun is quite brutal at close to medium range. Also, sabot shells are awesome versus bots.

The AR is a great tool, even if its at low levels. First and foremost.. Silencer. Second, laser sights.
Put these together and you've got a handy compliment to the stealth pistol.

Yeah, the sabot rounds are pretty good, especially with the small to medium bots, but there's not a lot of them in the game. Not enough to make it worth carrying the assault shotgun around IMHO anyway. I feel the same way about the flamethrower - it can be awesome but the ammo is too scarce to make it worth the inventory space.

Nah. The flamethrower is worth it until you start running into commandos.
There's nothing better than guarding a doorway and torching every guy that comes running into kill because he heard everyone else running around SCREAMING and covered in flames.
Bonus points for when they run into chairs and garbage and set those on fire.

I came to quite like the assault shotgun. The sabot rounds were great for taking out the annoying little spiderbots - I hated those things - and could also be used against cameras, since you got more sabot ammo than you really needed. And the normal rounds downed people in a close range firefight quite well, which is really what I wanted such a weapon for (there are far superior long range options). The assault rifle's secondary fire mode, while cool, was dangerous to use at short range, there wasn't much ammo for it, and it really couldn't replace the GEP.

I liked the Assault Rifle. Period. Nice little gun. And like DarkForge, I need to hear it. Forget the silencer on that thing.
I've never really used heavy weapons yet, but the day is coming when I'll introduce myself to them. I like the assualt rifle for close work, and the sniper rifle for long range. For some reason, I keep my pistol along, and use it sporadically.
It wasn't until the naval shipyards I really learned how valuable the assault shotgun really can be on bots.

Pyrian's dead right with the shotgun vs Spiderbots, I was going through the game with just the GEP and grenades as anti-robots and it was bloody hard work hitting them sometimes - especially as I was untrained in Heavy. And then what do you do when they're right next to you? Have to half kill yourself to get them! o9

A strategy I sometimes use is not to carry it, but to accumulate the ammo when I can. Then grab one off an enemy and use it for a while until the ammo is all gone, then throw it away and use something else again. The assault rifles themselves are plentiful enough to do that.

I quite like using a mix of low-tech and flame-thrower. There are a few situations where lo-tech is hard, eg because two guards are facing each other, or where you have to clear out an entire building. There isn't really room for the flamethrower and the "rifle skill" weapons, but lo-tech weapons only take one slot each.
