I play this RE style.
i've always labelled the SS games as survival horror, myself, along the lines of RE, silent hill, etc.

Except that SS is actually good.
And the term "survival horror" is, and always will be, a terminally idiotic bit of Engrish. It's like calling Pac-Man a "survival maze" game.

Hm. And explain exactly what your problem with RE happens to be.

In Deus Ex I didn't use 1 bit of ammo through out the game. I picked up enough ammo to fill up, never used 1 bullet.. And that's the only way I can play it, Deus Ex isn't really a shoot-em up game.. It's meant to be stealth.. I couldn't get into it using guns.. Prod owns, or baton with Master low-tech :D

The Silent Hill games were good (with the exception of 4, from what I've heard), and Resident Evil 4 met with pretty much universal acclaim, earning an absurd number of Game of the Year awards.
It's sort of strange that the genre got dubbed Survival Horror just because the phrase was on the Japanese version of a game released well into the 90s. If Resident Evil hadn't included that phrase on its CD cover, the genre would just be called Horror. Either that or no genre distinction would be made for horror games, so Silent Hill would just have been labeled a 3rd-person action/adventure or whatever.

Well, certainly stealth a very valid method of play, but the game is not 'meant' to be stealth. As the presence of a big ol' rocket launcher would tend to suggest. ;)

ignore him. sometimes i think he hates everything.
silent hill 1 and 2 are by far the most engrossing console games i own that don't have "metal gear" in the title.

Ammo is scarce on the floors right in front of you, yes. But e.g. in engineering there are tons of hidden standard clips. I used to summon more standard ammo when I first played SS2 but later on it hit me (yes I was younger and possibly more ignorant than I am now) that one could climb on crates and such in the same fashion like in Thief. Also recycling all mugs and plants and such + Replicator expert = money for ammo. Novadays I rarely run out of ammo.
I believe Irrational had a fulltime ladder programmer on the project.

Yes, recycling garbage items does add quite a bit of nanites to buy lots of ammo.
I always take every single garbage item I can find and collect all of them in rooms like MedSci chem. storage, or the small security office by the bulkhead in Engineering. :)
