And in case you hadn't noticed, the TTLG forums are a weensy bit larger than ShockGen.

You still haven't explained how the ladders are "clunky". They're impossible to fall off of accidentally, and they couldn't be easier to navigate-- you just look in the direction you want to go and push forward. You can even climb
around them without falling off!
He probably isn't used to games where you can look up and down. :p

Its good to see someone who dosent like the game around here once and a while. Theres only so many good things one can say about a game, and this breaks a bit of stale opinion. (I still disagree though.)

Yes, I registered mostly for the Deus Ex area, but with System Shock 2, I see the unrealized potential in the game, at least for me. For some of you, that potential has been realized. And that's cool, I respect everyone's right to like what they prefer ( that some here won't do the same for me, oh well, that's more of a reflection of them than on me )
Some limitations of the game, I understand come with the era in which it was developed. People can do more now than they could back then at least options wise. I'm sure people will make games more advanced in the future than they are now. But my issues are still about fundamental gameplay. Pacman and Frogger, no matter how rudimentary, are still fun. The core elements of good gameplay are still there.
SS2 lacks balance to me. If you want to give me an unlimited supply of respawns who have better visual and tactical range than me, then give me more ammo and options to counter them. If you give me better visual and tactical range, then make the enemies less frequent but much harder to kill to reward stealth. I mean look at the BOTM level, there are no patterns, no real strategy, no options, no real desire for the developers to ask you to use tactics that you've developed for 20 hours. No, just run in there, shoot the three tiny stars and pray the Every 2 Second Respawns don't chew you up first. Even the weird teeth thing. It didn't bother me that there were teeth, it bothered me that the game never really asked you to negotiate many dangerous and potentially fatal jumps and heights to prepare you at any point. I really have to point back to Deus Ex first level. It's a microsm for nearly everything you need to do in the game. It's more limited, but you get a taste.
I really do think a much more expansive tutorial and training area could have made this game a much more interesting experience.
System Shock 2 is not a bad game, in fact, in has some fairly interesting and cool elements and features to it, I just find it a game that didn't quite get there in terms of core gameplay. It lacked real balance.

I played Deus Ex after a friend recommended it. I really enjoyed that game and I was told to give System Shock 2 a shot because many elements of the gameplay was similar.

Why I did not enjoy SS2

I'll bet you walked into McDonald's and said "The Whopper beat the Big Mac."

You know, SS2 isn't half as hard as you make it sound. Not to say anything.
Well have fun with the streamlined stuff you like, while I play simulations that might hurt, annoy and even kill me - in a good way, don't worry. ;)

You counter the enemies with your feet, dummy. This isn't a game where you're supposed to kill everything you see. Sometimes the smartest course of action is to just run.

The main character moves along them very slowly and getting off of one can be a real pain. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to jump off the one in the slightly flooded Med/Sci area or the giant ladder near the Church in the Rickenbacker and ended up losing health or my life. When side jumping they are awesome. When jumping behind you they're almost impossible to control... well, for a newbie like me, at least.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that SS2 was never really supposed to be fair. It would totally ruin the atmosphere if everything was in your favour anyway. Besides, it's easy as crap once you get used to the game.

This is true - at first it's damned hard, but after a while it gets pretty easy.
And I'm not a big fan of the ladders either, btw, though it's probably the most minor of problems I've had with any game. :p
