Seriously, it's baffling to me how an organization can be so out of touch with modern culture, and yet still so very able to pluck people like so many strings upon the violin of guilt and tradition.
i think the reason is because many people don't view it as out of touch. Modern culture is a fleeting concept in many ways (i.e. the world looks differently to different people), and some people like Rome or any other religion for a variety of reasons.
i'm not trying to defend Rome here... i'm just saying that hey, the shoe fits for some people, and that's great. i think there are much larger threats to society out there than the RCC. Spitzer and public corruption comes immediately to mind (of course, the RCC has its share of problematic leadership, too).
(EDIT: not to mention shit like the Iraq War)

it's the difference between shoving your chips in with AA, AK or 72 over a long term basis, you all know who you are

Okay, so someone merged the threads, I thought I posted in the wrong place, deleted my post, and now this conversation makes absolutely no sense. It could have been the next 'Why does peoples take crap' thread, if it weren't for those bastard moderators.
