I am surprised that no one has posted and HA-HAed this thread yet, but apparently (and by the time it was published here I think things had become mere rumour) the church has said something about "sins" in our current time.

and for examples of how you can start attacking the church for trying to be the moral guardian that it has set itself out to be, feel free to agree with the generally misinformed comments on this page:

I have tried to find some source material but am having a hard time - basically the article claims that the church has identified some examples of the mortal sins of our time. I say "some examples" but the articles state that they are "replacing" the old ones; which is just one of the misleading assertions on those pages... see if you can spot them all. (or just start laughing at the church stating at excess wealth is a mortal sin... cause obviously an organisation with 1 billion odd members plus many more dead ones through the past 2000, most of whom have willingly donated, should beat it's self up for having money in the bank  )

It strikes me that the Catholic Church is guilty of pretty much all those sins. For one of the richest organisations in the world to lecture others about accumulating excessive wealth is breathtaking in its hypocrisy. Presumably their huge art collections, colossal global property portfolio and some of the world's most valuable prime real estate in central Rome doesn't count.
There's also a stunning lack of self-awareness in their criticism of poverty - their stance on contraception keeps millions mired in poverty all over the world.
I notice raping children, cosying up to dictators and moving large sums of money between dioceses to escape financial culpability aren't on the list of new sins - I wonder why?

Well never mind all that SD, apparently it's now OK to have (

Phew! That must be a huge relief for millions of women.
I though, am unfortunately buggered on the plastic bag recycling and will be going to hell.

I was wondering when the bashing would commence here. Nice work men.

I know we're all just a bunch of cynical old-farts in our late 20s here, but if this is the standard that reflects on Christians, myself included, then I can see why the world hates religion as a whole so much. I don't think 'backpedaling' is an adequate understatement.

I'm a forgive and forget christian (thats a dirty damn lie) so I'm willing to let this one slide, considering that it's a step in the right direction.
