I already have Civ V, but a word of advice to anyone looking at this, make sure you get Brave New World as well. The game goes from meh/ok-ish to quite good with the additions in BNV. Iirc the only things you won't get from Gods & Kings are the civiliztions, scenarios and custom maps specific to G&K.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. This is just vanilla Civ V with no frills, and as such has poor performance and limited options.

Do the expansions improve the slowdown then?

It's definitely better with G&K, although I didn't notice any performance boost with Brave New World.
The game still gets bogged down towards the end of the Renaissance and gets progressively worse, but that's probably because I always play at Marathon speed on the largest maps available. Limiting the number of opponents and city states also helps performance, but that also limits the gameplay. It's a balancing act, which is a bit of a shame really.

Brutal Legend goest to Angel Dust
Faster Than Light goes to icemann

Warlock: Master of the Arcane Ultimate Edition -- on Steam
This fantasy 4X was my favourite "cake" game of 2012. Not a whole lot of depth, but great fun and addictive.
