Those who advocate the banning of words should all have to take an undergrad course in Linguistics (covering Semantics and Pragmatics as well as Sociolinguistics). That'd either shut them up or they'd keep talking, but at least they might say more intelligent things.
(For the record, I find the use of 'gay' as a cover-all negative word rather annoying, but banning words is pretty much as stupid as it gets. Getting people to be more aware of what it is they're saying, connotations'n'all, is usually not done by telling them, "Don't say that, it's a bad word!")

My fav is the "obese" issue in the UK. Some
bright spark total imbecile suggested we stop describing obese kids as obese because its bad for their self esteem.
What are we supposed to call them?

The funny thing about that is that 'obese' is supposed to be the inoffensive PC word.

What are we supposed to call them? Lard arses? Fatty bom boms?
Wherever this retard reclamation is coming from never forget that we, the British, are the Kings of Political Correctness Gone Mad.

As Paz has probably suffered a nervous breakdown reading this thread I'll try to fill in for him. The reason the word 'obese' was not used is not because of POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD you dipsticks it's because of fairly understandable fears that the WORD ITSELF has become overused and is ignored due to that overuse
"Dr Will Cavendish, director of health and wellbeing at the Department of Health,
denied the word had been banned but said officials had 'chosen not to use it'.
He said
research showed that it 'shuts people down'."on the other hand you have the thrust of the tabloid articles, supported by Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, who said
Quote:
'It's a nasty word but, by God, it should sound alarm bells in parents' minds. This whole approach is a bit prissy and namby pamby,'
If you go along with this point of view you are DI Grim from The Thin Blue Line
you dicks
