I hate every single person in this thread who posted a picture of a spider. Those bastards belong on Skull Island.
If I had one of those things anywhere near my house I'd check into the nearest hotel.
CHRIST.

Pointing out the humane qualities in us = being smug? :bored:
No, but pouring out half a dozen smiley-laden posts full of condescending remarks about what
brutes we all are kinda is.

Oh, right. Like there's no chance of a spider making it into a hotel.
Not like this will bother anyone; I have a friend who had swallowed a spider that crawled into his mouth while he was sleeping.
EDIT: GBM I love how you deleted my scores but kept Kolya's.

You
cannot override purely instinctive behaviour, it simply isn't physically possible. It takes
milliseconds for you to suppress that shit and start being rational, and by that time it's far too late.
Is the threat so immediate that we have to talk in ms here? ;) You never said the spider attacked you or anything. You took your time watching it. Now take bloody good time driving it out. Prefer water to fire :)

I don't hold humans in any higher regard than the rest of the animal kingdom, and I have always thought the "we are qualitatively better than them" attitude to be utterly stupid, false, and missing the point entirely. I celebrate the fact that I am a different sort of animal to the others, I don't try to puff up my ego by thinking I'm better.
Now that's gold!:thumb:

No. The way you go about it, and the way you have conducted yourself in every aspect since your very first post in this thread = condescending.
I can't remember the last time I saw someone so pompous about their own capacity for humanity. Now that you've got the not-killing-spiders bit of being a decent human being sorted, try working on your bedside manner.

Can someone scratch my back please? I'm itching with all this spidery talk.

That's what probably separates people like Buddh and Jesus from us.
... but everyone knows Jesus was a spider smacker!
Since we're sharing eight-legged horror stories, I should recount the time I was on 'exercise' with the British Army on a beach in Cyprus. We'd previously 'assaulted' said beach from a landing craft in blazing sunshine with a 3-ton lorry loaded with beef, beer and a portable fridge.
That night I had to stay up on radio and guard duty. While we savoured the Mediterranean midnight onshore breeze, I and a colleague asked each other whether the stories of a small local spider were true. Apparently, it was reputed to anaesthetise the skin of its victims whilst they sleep before tucking into a hearty meal.
Anyway, the following morning, much to my horror, I awoke with a numb and distinctly mushy face which, when shown to others, aroused looks of almost equal terror.
However, it turned out it was not the spider, but the raging sun which had caught me the day before, as I did my best to lay below the 3-ton truck on the landing craft with my beret over my eyes, but unable to entirely cover my cheeks. Freaking nightmare, let me tell you. It took weeks to get the feeling back in my skin.
Never trusted spiders ... before or since.
Damn I'm itchy.

That's what probably separates people like Buddh and Jesus from us. You're not really expecting anyone to believe this, are you? Neither do you yourself. This comes off more as a lame attempt to nail the discussion. Heh, for all your christmas, easter celebrations, the fact remains that you don't give a fig about the salient parts of his teachings.
Son, I
live by the salient points of those teachings. I knew what they were and why they were important long before I heard that some other geezers hundreds of years previous had come to the self-same obvious conclusions. Trouble is that I'm not sure people generally get what the salient points are, and get bogged down in the nitty-gritty and irrelevant nonsense -- which usually ends up with them arguing with me about stuff I don't care about. The bottom line is that I behave as I am meant to behave, and that way I never have to apologise for a damned thing. Similarly I expect other animals to behave as they are meant to behave, and I don't expect them to apologise for anything. On occasion my behaviour might clash with theirs, and depending on our relative positions in the Food Chain one or the other of us is going to win. I won't hold a grudge against a shark for biting my fool ass if I'm flailing around in the ocean.
I never try to fool myself into thinking that biology isn't biology no matter how many legs something has or what kind of skin it wears. I know my place in the world, and I behave as befits that understanding. I don't have to
believe anything, I just have to know it.
And if I had a fig to give, I would eat it. It's my fig, I'll eat it if I want. This is how we work, this is what we are. Trying to say otherwise is delusional and -- to my mind, at least -- very, very sad.

It's a fucking spider dude.
And anyways the number of cow and pig deaths this man is indirectly responsible for is equal to roughly 235,342,235 spiders, so you may find yourself with bigger things to lecture about.
(chickens too and sometimes fishes)

Don't feel bad/jealous if you find yourself incapable of even trying to think/act on the lines of a normal decent human being, or even agreeing with someone who is trying to :)
