WOW!!! They can move at a top speed of 10 mph! Now THAT'S scary.
Edit: Also you should check out the camel spider stories on that site. Gives me the creeps...

How can they
not be spiders if they're considered arachnids?
'The order Solifugae is a group of arachnids, containing around 900 species. The name derives from Latin, and means those that flee from the sun. The order is also known by the names Solpugida, Solpugides, Solpugae, Galeodea and Mycetophorae. Their common names include windscorpion, sun spider and camel spider.'

I don't think being an arachnid automatically makes it a spider, in the same was as being a mammal doen't automatically make you a cat.
Does it work like that?

e.g. scorpions are also arachnids, but are definitely not spiders, in the same way that: primates (apes), simians (monkeys), felines (cats) and canines (doggies) are all mammals.
Arachnid is a higher rank in the taxonomic (naming) chain. So all spiders, scorpions and solifuges are arachnids.
see (
http://www.tigerhomes.org/animal/curriculums/taxonomy-pc.cfm) for a description of how it works.
the spider is placed in phylum Arthropoda, class (classis) Arachnida, order (ordo) Araneae
Camel spiders will be (I think) order Solifuguae (please god let me have my latin declension right else someone will pick me up on it, I know).
There are 10 orders of arachnid.

I stand corrected.
As far as I'm concerned, if they have more than four legs I'd rather not have to deal with them thankyouverymuch.
Given my penchant for flushing creepy-crawlies, I can't help but imagine our septic tank cleaner's surprise if he were to open our septic tank (ahh, country living) & see something like that floating on top. :cheeky:

Dang it - still, it's been over 12 years since I last had a latin lesson, and the arachnids aren't my usual beasties.

Arachnids don't have to be dangerous either. The Horseshoe Crabs I used to work with in school are Arachnids but are as harmless and docile as kittens.
(but not nearly as cuddly)

No updates :(
???
We want to know.
Besides: what's the generation span for purple monsters? You might have a nice family of 3000 spidies now. Updates, photos, reports, please.
Or should we send papparazzi to take pictures of your spider ;)
