While everyone else is busy taking a dump on this thread, I think I'll reply and hope it doesnt disappear under all this crap.
Now knowing too much about the soviets (at least the government), I cant imagine why theyd want to kill him. Was his perpetual peace-mission too much of a boon to their economy, or was it the fact that his papal hat looked like an extended KGB hat, or whatever those soviet military-types are called?
They must have figured his hat was a mockery of their military... but I like to think of him as being Pope John Paul the White because of it.

Well, I haven't read much about this particular case, but I do know that JPII was very openly and vocally anti-Communist. He was a major source for inspiration and self-confidence especially among the Polish people, and probably among Catholics in other East Bloc countries, as well.
1981 was a very turbulent year in Poland. The independent labour union Solidarnosc had recently been founded, and the political leadership had introduced martial law to cope with civil unrest and demonstrations. The Soviets were clearly afraid of "losing" Poland, not to mention the danger of political unrest to spread to other Warsaw Pact countries. Amid all this, the new Pope was a very important focal point for the underground movements. So yeah, I do think the Soviets had a reason to try to get rid of him.

The Soviets basically banned the (Orthodox) Church in Russia, so the Pope (although there is tension between Orthodox and normal Catholic I am led to believe) would still be seen as the enemy. Remember that communism is to be the religion of the people effectively.
