twisty, I'm in a similar position as you were, with a first-gen i7-2600k but saddled with what I consider to be a problematic motherboard, the Asus P8P67 Pro. The USB3 (passthrough) ports have never worked reliably, and Asus had to recall all boards early on due to other issues.
Part of me would love to upgrade to something a bit less energy-hungry later in the year (seriously, the darn thing pumps out enough heat to make me need a tower fan in the room), maybe with a GTX970; a 980 would be really nice for future VR possibilities but I don't think I can justify almost doubling the price now that I game a lot less.
You will probably be able to pick up a 970 or 980 fairly cheaply soon once the next NVIDIA cardscards get released. Probably the most significant benefit I found with general computing was upgrading to an all SDD system, and upping the ram to 32GB. I'm also stuck with an older board that I wanted to change but would have had to upgrade the CPU for what would probably be of little benefit; the first gen i7 is still very good.

Very much so - that's why I've been loath to upgrade it just to deal with bad connectors (and it must be said, a BSOD problem that is more likely from the RAM). A cheap 980 (or even possibly a 1070 once NVIDIA release it) would be very welcome - I replaced the system drive with an SSD a few years back and was astounded by the speed increase, though moving from the piddly 8Gb of RAM that I currently have would probably be a good idea too.
